About this listen

In this anti-slavery novel by the American author Harriet Beecher Stowe, Uncle Tom's Cabin is centered on the character of Uncle Tom, a long-suffering black slave around whom the stories of other characters - both fellow slaves and slave owners - revolve. This emotional novel portrays the reality of slavery while also stressing that Christian love can defeat something as damaging as enslavement of fellow human beings. Uncle Tom's Cabin was the best-selling book in the 19th century, and second best-selling following the Bible.

Good try - a heartbreaking and world-altering book

The narrator does his level best to bring the formidably large character list to life. With some (like Uncle Tom) he succeeds magnificently, giving the hero of the tale a suitably majestic and resonant timbre. With some of the other characters, he fails. But let's forgive him. This book was a world changer, helping to advance the abolitionist cause and with it, the eventual removal of that horrific stain on the American conscience, slavery.

The Narrater

With audio books as we know the narrater play a very big part in making a book come alive.
This book is 50/50, Sean Crisden has an unexciting voice when reading but his characters are great,
very lively.
