Summary

A dark enchantment blights the land in the award-winning Uprooted – a captivating fantasy inspired by fairy tales and steeped in Slavic folklore from Naomi Novik, author of the Scholomance trilogy and the Temeraire series.

'A great heroine, new takes on old myths and legends, and surprising twists and turns. A delight' – Cassandra Clare, author of The Mortal Instruments

Agnieszka loves her village, set deep in a peaceful valley. But the nearby enchanted forest casts a shadow over her home. Many have been lost to the Wood and none return unchanged. The villagers depend on an ageless wizard, the Dragon, to protect them from the forest's dark magic. However, his help comes at a terrible price. One young village woman must serve him for ten years, leaving all they love and value behind.

The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka fears her dearest friend Kasia will be picked next, for she's everything Agnieszka is not – beautiful, graceful and brave. Yet when the Dragon comes, it's not Kasia he takes . . .

Uprooted is a stunning romantic fantasy filled with unexpected twists, beautiful friendships and fierce battles against dark forces.

Critic reviews

Uprooted by Naomi Novik is enchanting, in every sense of that fine old word. A charming and inviting story that looks unflinchingly at the strangling roots of hurt and revenge. (ROBIN HOBB)
The magic in Uprooted, with its realistic moral dimension, is so vividly believable that it almost seems you could work the spells. But the book will do that for you. (URSULA K. LE GUIN)
Wild, thrilling, and deeply, darkly magical. An instant classic. (LEV GROSSMAN)
Magical and practical, otherworldly and planted in the real, I could NOT stop reading this book and neither will you! (TAMORA PIERCE)
Uprooted is one of those tales you come back to over and over again because it's just that enchanting. The adventure builds with such tension that you are peeking through your hands at the end, hoping it will all be okay, and Novik delivers a conclusion that's deeply satisfying, earning a permanent space on my bookshelf that I'll revisit often. (KEVIN HEARN)
Naomi Novik's Uprooted is a marvelous fantasy reminiscent of Howl's Moving Castle and vastly superior to The Hobbit. Her characters, setting, and the magic they use are all brilliant. I devoured the book in one reading. Well done! I want more! (TODD MCCAFFREY)
The roots of Uprooted are planted deep in fairy tale lore, but the story that Naomi Novik has coaxed forth is fresh and compelling. It reads like a previously undiscovered origin myth in the best possible way! (JACQUELINE CAREY)
Every so often you come upon a story that seems like a lost tale of Grimm newly come to light. Uprooted is such a novel. Its narrative spell is confidently wrought and sympathetically cast. I might even call it bewitching. (GREGORY MAGUIRE)

Surprised

This is not my usual type of book and so I was surprised to find how much I enjoyed it. It is beautifully written and narrated. I found that if it had stopped in 3 different places, it would have been ‘enough book’ but it just kept on going. Loved it!!

A story that goes nowhere and takes a long time getting there!

This book was hard work and I tried so hard to follow this. It started ok but gradually went on and on going nowhere.
The narrator sent me to sleep. Not engaging at all. Sorry, nothing about this book or its presentation delivered. A wasted credit in my opinion.

A good book, I just missed more plot

So the book was really good overall but I did find myself craving more plot and less description of everything. I enjoyed the Scholomance series by the same author more in comparison because here I missed the tension of really wanting to resolve the issue for the main character. In Uprooted I recall thinking about a fifth of the book in So what's this actually about? It was still an enjoyable read, certainly not a waste of your time.

Fascinating and original storytelling

I’m so pleased I found this book it’s like a fairy tale about fairytales. The writing is wonderful and the story grips you from the start. The narrator does a fantastic job with a soothing, melodic tone throughout. What could easily have been yet another bland ‘latent magical talent - becomes best of the best’ wizard’s apprentice trope is actually a poignant tale exploring deep emotions and nuanced motivations. As in real life bad is never all bad and good never all good. I would highly recommend this to all fantasy lovers. It’s the first book I’ve read from this author and I’ll definitely be exploring more of her work.

A delightful listen

A charming story that slowly pulled me, perfectly narrated which made it all the more a pleasure to listen. The story wasn't particularly clever or intellectually stimulating, but it was mildly entertaining and I found myself relaxing while listening to the story.

Generally a good journey

Would you consider the audio edition of Uprooted to be better than the print version?

Can't actually comment on this

What about Katy Sobey’s performance did you like?

It was well read, her pace and voice matching characters well.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It was a fun book to listen to, I can't say it was the deepest book I have ever been drawn nto but I did have enough investment in it to 'feel' the characters.

Any additional comments?

Generally a good little adventure, transporting you to an interesting mythology and leave you rooting for the main character.

A wonderful well read fairy tale

This was a lovely, lengthy story, well worded and read with fairy tale grace and beauty and yet, true to the grim dark roots whence such tales spring, darkness and horror snarls and spits put corruption and hate, and yet woven through it all our witch gleans magic, light and even love in her dishevelled messy fashion to deliver us a delightful satisfying end through many trials and tribulations.

I loved this as I do Naomi's drsgon tales and I'll be doing Spinning Silver next. This is an ideal tale to let someone read to you for a week or two!
