 Ein Fischer, der mit seiner Frau in einem armseligen Pisspott lebt, fängt eines Tages im See einen Butt, der als verzauberter Königssohn um sein Leben bittet. Der gutmütige Fischer lässt ihn wieder frei. Als die Frau des Fischers das hört, fragt sie ihn, ob er sich denn zum Dank von dem Butt nichts gewünscht habe. Als er fragt, was er sich denn wünschen sollte, drängt sie ihren Mann, den Butt erneut zu rufen, um sich ein richtiges Haus zu wünschen. Diesen Wunsch erfüllt ihm der Zauberfisch. Doch Ilsebill ist damit nicht zufrieden.

Immer wieder zwingt sie ihrem Mann, den Butt zu rufen. Sie will ein Schloss, will König, Kaiser und Papst sein. Je unverschämter Ilsebills Wünsche werden, desto schlechter wird das Wetter. Der See wird erst grün, dann dunkelblau, dann schwarz, und immer heftiger braust der Sturm. Nun will sie Sonne und Mond aufgehen lassen und wie der liebe Gott sein. Doch nun ist Schluss. Für ihre Maßlosigkeit versetzt sie der Butt zur Strafe zurück in die armselige Hütte wie am Anfang
