Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

As any feminist who talks about the problems of girls and women will know, the first question you will ever be asked is 'But what about MEN?' After eleven years of writing bestsellers about women and dismissing this question, having been very sure that the concerns of feminism and men are very different things, Caitlin Moran realised that this wasn't quite right, and that the problems of feminism are also the problems of, yes, men.

So, what about men? Why do they only go to the doctor if their wife or girlfriend makes them? Why do they never discuss their penises with each other - but make endless jokes about their balls? What is porn doing for young men? Is their fondness for super-skinny jeans leading to an epidemic of bad mental health? Are men allowed to be sad? Are men allowed to lose? Have Men's Rights Activists confused 'power' with 'empowerment'? And is Jordan B Peterson just your mum - but with some mad theory about a lobster?

In this book, Caitlin intends to answer all this and more - because if men haven't yet answered the question 'What About Men?', it's going to be down to a busy woman to do it.

Would love this to be mandatory read in schools!

An amazing book celebrating men whilst confronting the dangerous impact and power of a mean minority.

Thank you for holding women to account too!

Mind opened

As a man, we want an expert to explain stuff to us. Turns out Caitlin may be one of those experts. Fact based and source driven data (real mens opinions). My eyes were opened, and thoughts provoked. Porn, lady parts, relationships, and my struggles to seek help all explored.

Challenged my thinking

This was well researched in the main and very refreshing. It does present the world a bit too much through a liberal, middle class lens. And it’s a bit crude for my taste. But there is no doubt this, like all of her books, is a work of art and has the power to help us be better humans.

Interesting, thought provoking & funny!

A great listen for everyone regardless of gender! Note: it didn’t bother me much, but she does swear a lot.

Laugh out loud, disgusting, thought provoking

I had to think carefully about scoring for this book. It’s a five or it’s a one – there’s no in between. In parts, quite brilliant; in other parts, offensive and angry.

Was it a five?
There were loads of laugh-out-loud moments. The humour from taking things out of context can be eye wateringly funny and she skillfully used it to illustrate some absurdities of maleness as she saw it. And my goodness, she’s a good presenter. Great voice, fearless and sounds full of fun.
The limitations of her “research” was cheerfully admitted, generalisations occasionally fessed up to and the contempt and disregard for context were generally wittily applied.
In a way, the foul language was a bit funny because it was so unexpected and confidently stated, coming as it was from a grown up woman who was taking great pleasure in shocking people by ignoring such outdated tropes as standards. (I did ponder whether the freedom to do just that after 50 years of feminism has actually improved anyone’s quality of life, but that’s by the by. I wasn't going to allow it to ruin my enjoyment, much as I hate bad language from anyone.)
Even the rants were sort of OK because she clearly had something to say, rather than simply stating over and over that men are twats without any evidence at all. And she did raise some great questions that got me thinking really deeply.

Or was it a one?
If you’re sensitive, she just spewed out poorly researched opinions, generalizing horribly and disregarding context to continually stress the point that the problem with men in general starts with the fact that, well, they’re not women.
There were three or four enjoyment-sapping rants around feminism and how rubbish blokes can be, including rounding on two named individual males by picking a couple of sentences out of context and talking as if they completely defined the men’s lives and attitudes. In those latter cases, my irritation at the rants was eased by her eventual conclusion that they weren’t worth listening to because they haven't written about the joys of having a really good poo, which is what a sassy female writer would write about. Hearing that conclusion drawn with such certainty made it obvious that the book isn’t one that should be taken too seriously.
Up until that point, I had been thinking that if I wanted to listen to moronic swearing and banter about lady parts, periods and tits then I could go to a football match or sit near a hen party after 9 p.m. But some of the questions she was raising – wow, they could open up some doors into my soul.

Ultimately, I gave it a very strong 5.

This was primarily because she asked some interesting questions that could start some much-needed conversations. And the final chapter was a belter. All the abrasive dismissals, anger and frustration that came through earlier in the book was replaced by a much softer recognition that actually, there are some good things about men. It came as a really pleasant surprise to me.

Enjoy the book for what it is. It’s very witty. Just don’t start reading it if you’ve got a sensitive man head on or you’re expecting fairness, because that’s not something that good comedy delivers.

Caitlin does it again!

Another brilliant book by Caitlin Moran - opening up a crucial and under-discussed topic. Uncomfortable but essential listening.
