About this listen

Many times I heard people say that you'll have no friends if you're a policeman. How wrong they were. If you were right with them, they were right with you.' PC Martyn Johnson is back on the beat with more hilarious and heart-warming stories from the golden age of policing. With his nose for trouble and a knack for mischief, there's no such thing as a quiet shift for the friendly Yorkshire bobby - from drunken dogs and runaway horses to high-speed chases after Burglar Bill, there's always something to keep him busy and always another troublemaker to put to rights. And with a cuppa-tea stop and a familiar face on every corner of his beat, he's never far from a friend. Read by the author.

Critic reviews

"A wonderful slice-of-life autobiography . . . vividly atmospheric." (Daily Express)

a policemans lot continued.

If you could sum up What's Tha Up To Nah? in three words, what would they be?

a caring man

What was one of the most memorable moments of What's Tha Up To Nah??

hard to choose one out of all the anecdotes without spoiling the book.

What does Martyn Johnson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

not all authors can narrate their own books successfully but martyn does.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

a policemen's lot.

Any additional comments?

a good follow on to what's that up to once more talking about the people he met as a policeman patrolling the streets of Sheffield in the early nineteen sixties and a few when he was riding a bicycle, motor bike or later a panda car as the years passed by.
the book finishes with him being promoted to the C.I.D.
what happens next? I hope he carries on with his story.

Relaxing read

Martyn Johnson's reading of his book is somewhat ponderous, but nevertheless I enjoyed this book a great deal. It has many amusing anecdotes from a policeman's life 'back in the day'. There are a couple of incidents recalled in which the author does not shirk from the realities of life and are thus a bit challenging to listen to. Overall the book is entertaining and informative. If you enjoy this, then also try books by Mike Pannett - unfortunately not on audible (yet?)

Bring back the Bobby on the beat, fascinating story about on the beat. Some sad , some hilarious. But all very interesting.

Absolutely loved this, shame that I can’t seem to find many like this. It’s a shame more don’t write about the same topic in this style. I’m sure it would do just as well. Just a shame it’s taken this long to find it. Would recommend.
Can’t think of anything I didn’t like.
My only suggestion would be more please.
