Summary

Joyce Carol Oates paints a haunting tapestry of American life in 22 short stories that take the listener from tempestuous inner cities to isolated rural backwaters. Obsession with loss, fear of betrayal, and sudden violence plague Oates’ characters as she examines the lives of the working poor and follies of the irresponsible rich with searing clarity. George Guidall’s and Barbara Caruso’s masterful performances make this rich collection of stories a must-listen.

An unfulfilling listen.

A 5-star rating and narration by George Guidell decided me to this book. I also thought it might be interesting to have lots of audiobooks in one as this is a compendium of short stories.

Rather like channel surfing instead of watching a full film or documentary, this book left me unsatisfied and feeling like I had wasted a night infront of the TV. The author's style isn't brilliant - capable yes, but outstanding no, and a lot of the stories simply lack anything interesting to say. I will probably avoid other titles from this author, though I remain hopeful for pleasant surprise.

Avoid.
