About this listen

The brand new novella in the Sunday Times #1 bestselling Rivers of London series.

****

THEY DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY ACROSS THE POND...

When ex-FBI Agent Patrick Henderson calls in an 'X-Ray Sierra India' incident, the operator doesn't understand. He tells them to pass it up the chain till someone does.

That person is FBI Special Agent Kimberley Reynolds. Arriving snowbound Northern Wisconsin, she finds that a tornado has flattened half the town - and there's no sign of Henderson.

Things soon go from weird to worse, as neighbours report unsettling sightings, key evidence goes missing, and the snow keeps rising - cutting off the town, with no way in or out...

As the clues lead to the coldest of cold cases - a cursed expedition into the frozen wilderness - Reynolds follows a trail from the start of the American nightmare, to the horror that still lives on today...

Love the series… but this one is not up to standard

An avid fan of the series. These side short books are a bit hit or miss. This one is a clear miss… but if u love the series it won’t stop u listening to it!

Not the classic Rivers of London, be prepared for that!

A number of reviewers have commented that they dislike the change of characters, locale, and narrator. Some have said they gave up after the first few chapters. I’d agree that the narrator improves as the story progresses, but she’s still good at the start. If you’re expecting a British accent and Kobna HS then it is going to jar.

The story has a different tone of voice to the UK-based adventures of Peter Grant. That doesn’t mean it isn’t as entertaining. I liked the story and the layers of complexity. I warmed to the narrator too. The story could have been longer I think. The ending seemed to unpack very quickly so I only gave it a 4 for story. There are lots of nice threads to be picked up in the future adventures of Kim and Bill too.

Story was ok but not convinced by the narrator

The story is set in the USA and follows a case by FBI agent Kimberley Reynolds who appeared in Whispers Underground book 5. This story was based in the Great Lakes and was fairly entertaining but I found the narration unconvincing and distracting, especially when she was supposedly talking to Peter Grant.

Not his best

I eagerly await each new book in the Rivers of London series. Unfortunately I feel that this is the weakest in this series, so far. It lacks the humour and depth that I’ve come to expect from Bens excellent other books. It’s an interesting side piece, but unfortunately that’s all it is.

kept falling asleep

I do love the Peter Grant series and the German novella. But this one doesn't do much for me. Not good, not really bad. The narrator is not up to the standard of Holbrook Smith. I just kept falling asleep.

Good version

Happy to take on America but not sure the characters were as strong as London

Good but not as good as the main books

I enjoyed the book and had no issue with hearing a different voice. However, it didn't feel quite as entertaining as the main stories or the other novella. Perhaps a longer story from the US would have had more of a chance to pull the listener in? Still a good but short listen.

Odd narration

Hard to connect this Agent Reynolds with that who appears in the Rivers of London, seem like different characters. Narration makes her seem cold and very flat

Narrator made it hard to follow.

I found the story difficult to follow in parts because of the Narrator. Her American accent sounds very fake and distracting. It sounds very different to how the same character is portrayed in the main series.

Her male character voices all sound to similar. there were moments when I got confused about who was speaking and why someone was acting out of character, only to realise it was a different character speaking. When Reynolds calls Peter for help, his accent again sounds nothing like he usually sounds. I feel like literally zero attempt was made to match the original books. She even says the authors name different to how it is usually pronounced in the main series.
