About this listen
Narrated by actress and comedian Gemma Whelan, best known for playing Yara Greyjoy in the HBO fantasy-drama series Game of Thrones
In 17th-century England, civil war rages and witches have become pawns in a plot to oust the king. Red-haired Evey does not want to be a witch, but she cannot deny the magick coursing through her veins. In a country seething with civil war, superstition, dread and dark forces are at work. A storm is coming. After witnessing the brutal murder of her mother by witch-hunters, Evey vows to avenge her and track down her killers. Fury burns in her bright and strong. But she has promised her mother that she will keep Dill, her little sister, safe. Dill: the gifted one, their mother's favourite. Dill, who their mother entrusted with the scrying stone, which should rightfully be Evey's.
Battling a terrible jealousy of Dill, Evey seizes the scrying stone and abandons her little sister with their Aunt Grey at the coven in the woods. Even though Evey longs to be free she has a promise to keep and she cannot rest until justice is done. She sets off to town where the men who murdered her mother are gathering for the witch trials. But as the lust for blood and retribution rises to fever pitch, will Evey keep true to the bonds of sisterhood and to the magick that is her destiny?
A breathtaking debut about the power of women, witchcraft, fury, revenge and the ties that bind us.

Powerful!
Such a well-written story, such wordsmanship is a treasure so rare to find. Add to that the perfect narrator and you have this wonderful book.
I was transported to this time of witches and found myself thinking along with a style that feels so old, so right for the story.
Bravo!

Beautiful sad story
So sad to think how witches were persecuted. This book gives an insight into the history of witches along with the beautiful story of love between two sisters at a time of peril and betrayal.
My eyes were watering as I listened. Gemmas reading was beautifully done too!!

best audiobook I've listened to
not only is this a beautifully written tale of female power and sisterly love, with such unique descriptions that drag you into its world and realistic characters.... It is definitely the best narrated audiobook I've listened to. read clearly but with great character and the right amount of emotion and drama!
Thank you for such a splendid listen.

Outstanding witchery at it's best✨️
I had no idea what I was going to hear upon selecting this book on Audible, but loved every minute. Perfectly and melodious written with heartfelt characters who urge you onwards without stopping. I completed the book in two 'hearings' and completed my gardening with tears and laughter. Thank you Finbar, I shall be searching for your other books with eagerness. x ✨️ x

Enchanting and immersive
Was a very quick read managed to go through it in about a day of listening. The author provided a poetic sort of style of writing, very descriptive but engrossing. Do love the characters involved and the use of the destructive civil war history behind it all.
