Entertaining, thought-provoking and educational

A very well researched and observed story of the plight of young David – orphaned, taken to the workhouse, then wrenched away from his siblings to be sent to Yorkshire to work in the coal mines.

While Maggie Cobbett paints an accurate picture of hardship and bleakness of 19th-century life for children like David, she balances this well with Yorkshire humour, intricate detail, and wonderfully drawn characters. David grips the heart of the reader and takes us along with him as he settles into his new life with his new job, his new family – and new challenges; never forgetting his brothers and sister, and determined to reunite one day.

A heart-warming and suspenseful tale that is difficult to put down.
