Summary

Mary Shields is a moody, acerbic probation officer, dealing with some of Glasgow’s worst cases and her job is on the line. Liam Macdowall was imprisoned for murdering his wife, and he’s published a series of letters to the dead woman, in a book that makes him an unlikely hero – and a poster boy for men’s rights activists. Liam is released on licence into Mary’s care, but things are far from simple. Mary develops a poisonous obsession with Liam and his world, and when her son and Liam’s daughter form a relationship, Mary will stop at nothing to impose her own brand of justice … with devastating consequences. A heart-pounding, relentless and chilling psychological thriller, rich with deliciously dark and unapologetic humour, Worst Case Scenario is also a perceptive, tragic and hugely relevant book by one of the most exciting names in crime fiction.

Hmmmm… this is a tricky one…

I really didn’t enjoy this because it was so dark. However…
The characterisation was very well done.
The concept, although massively depressing, was very clever.
I really don’t know what to say about this book! It was good, but I really didn’t enjoy it.

Takes no prisoners or does it

Oh what a wonderful tangled web Helen FitzGerald has woven.
This book talks like real life sounds and the humour seeps ever so cunningly from scene to scene. It’s raw, for sure, however, that is how life rolls.
Case loads and the king-that-is-burocracy will have you laughing & crying.
If you’re a little bit squeamish, hang in through the no-holds barred intro and board the rollercoaster

Good until the end

Why did the author just give up? Could she not imagine an ending so just gave up?! Don’t download - it’s good but ends mid-story!

Very disappointing

I listened to the complete book in the hope that it would improve but unfortunately it did not. I purchased it at it was the designated book for my book group. The story was depressing and rather confusing and the ending was ridiculous.

A good premise poorly executed.

This has the potential to be a great listen but it didn’t grab me.
I’m an hour from the end waiting to feel sympathy for the main character.

The humour just isn’t funny, it’s dull.

The plot is fine and has real potential but it relies on the main character and the storylines are left undeveloped in favour of trying to write ‘gags’ that don’t hit the mark.

I’d really thought that this would be just my kind of book and I’m still waiting to see whether there is a moment at the end where everything is drawn together well but I’m not optimistic about it.
