  • S2E2: Strength Training for Runners
    Nov 22 2021
Be honest with yourself, are you a runner who could probably benefit from doing some strength and conditioning? Do you struggle to stay motivated to do it? Are you recurrently injured? Perhaps you don’t really know what to actually do or where to even start?

In this episode, Dr. Juliet McGrattan is joined by fitness instructor and Health Coach Chantel Oakley.  With huge experience as a trainer, including working with Nike, Chantel walks us through why strength work is so important for runners. She explains what benefits we’ll get, how quickly we’ll notice them and how to do exercises with good form. Starting with simple body weight exercises and progressing to resistance bands and one set of dumbbells, we’ll discover how it’s actually quite simple for us all to add some strength work into our week.

More than that, Chantel helps us to reconsider our motivations for training. How to move from a life of ‘should do’s’ and shame to one of ‘can do’s’ and hope. A mind set switch can prove very powerful when it comes to creating and sticking with new habits. You’ll be heading straight for your fitness kit by the end.

  • S2E1: How to Run Your First Marathon
    Oct 22 2021
Dr. Juliet McGrattan kicks off a second season of the Active Health podcast with a motivating and inspiring chat about marathon running. She is joined by sports journalist and co-host of the WiSP Sports Desk, Nancy Gillen who was steered into running as a way to stay fit during the Pandemic lockdown in the UK.  Nancy admits she had previously hated running and never thought she would ever be capable of taking on a marathon. Fast forward a few months and she impulsively entered herself in the 2021 London Marathon ballot. Rather than freaking out when she got a spot, she decided to embrace the opportunity. She set about researching marathon plans, training in earnest and just taking things week by week at her own pace.  Nancy tells Juliet how she made the whole journey entirely on her own with no coach or running buddies. And how she overcame a previous knee injury, kept herself occupied on long runs and slowly discovered how powerful her body and mind truly are. This really is a masterclass in how to run your first marathon. If you’re thinking you might like to rise to the marathon challenge, don’t miss this. Full of tips and advice, motivation and inspiration, this very personal story of how to aim high will have you signing up for a marathon and heading to the start line with confidence.
