AfterschoolEd

By: Lee and Rose Johnson
  • Summary

  • AfterschoolEd: the homeschool podcast nobody asked for! We're talking about aspects of homeschool that aren't usually covered: the senior year, all the tests and college application processes, the gap year, going to college as a girl who's been mostly homeschooled in rural MT her whole life, and going out into the "real world" as a homeschool grad. We'll have some great tips for homeschooling, and some fun peaks into our world living on the Beartooth Front and running a bustling business. All of this set in a family bar, with a profane and probably dangerous chef. We'll drop new eps on a biweekly basis.

  • Spookisode IV
    Nov 5 2024

On maybe the spookiest day ever: a cold, gray, harsh, bitter election day, under constant fire of the biting Beartooth Front wind, we hunker down and publish the last of our spookisodes.
We had so much fun, we snuck in one more, recorded on Halloween Eve, released on Election Day: the scariest of all episodes.

We start with an SOS where Rose teaches us the origins of Halloween. It's cool. You into mumsing or guising?

Rose takes on a new segue, named Rose Way for now, and dives into hot takes on the halloween costumes of the year.

A GhostEd sement takes a few unexpected turns, becoming one of the craziest trips down memory lane. Chef walks us through his encounters with ghosts (he's way way more into them than you would have thought), right up to his epic battle with the ghost of his father in law. Chef's. . . . well, chef's nuts, frankly.

A WHM Trailer Game inspired Name It has Rose guessing famous halloween movies based on trivia deets. It's a hit, and we'll have to do more.

We maybe stretched to call it a GhostEd, as our second GhostEd segment is really a double header of classic true crime stories. We learn Rose is way, way into true crime. It's a couple crazy stories.

We finish our last Spookisode of '24 with a Halloween ReviewEd. We talk more costumes, we talk candy, and we rank where Halloween falls on our personal holiday lists.

Last Spookisode Tip Out is a classic window into Rose and Chef: shopping and mapping and doing it in style.

Stay safe in the coming days y'all. Fans of the show know we're rooting for a Harris win with the frosting on the cake being a Tester win too. We'll see. Fingers crossed. Much love either way. Feeling terrified but optimistic about the former, and sad and worried about the latter.

  • Spookisode III Dare to Listen
    Oct 30 2024

Our 13th Episode is also the 3rd Spookisode, and it's downright haunting. Children, the elderly, those prone to fainting, the light hearted, ninnywaggles, and those prone to gasping should probably not attempt to listen.

We ease in, with a Social Studies showing off a homeschool leadership achievement. It's another sneakily helpful homeschool segment.

Then we start to get spooky: a Would You Rather that straight up freaks Chef out.

Now we get downright scary: we try to scare Rose straight with the straight dope on DRUGS. We start with all the legal or readily available ones.

For an SOS segue, we learn why Friday the 13th is a thing in our popular culture. It's a cool story, with a spooky vibe just right for the season.

A micro 86ed has Chef trending and he won't shut up about it.
    Luckily his jokes are OK.

We finish our harrowing DarED episode with the harder drugs. Chef has an astonishignly frank discussion about mushrooms in particular.

Seasonal tip outs round out a crazy ride. We're. . . . we're the ones who do this and we're still not sure what the hell we're doing. It's fun though.

  • Spookisode II Smashing Pumpkin Spice
    Oct 23 2024

The Second Ever Spookisode starts with a NYC update. Chef almost had a panic attack in Brooklyn, so that's legit scary.

We finish our GhostEd sandwiches from Spookisode I last week, when Chef intro'd Yuba and Rose intro'd Dyatlov. We flip flop and Chef starts with his theory of Dyatlov. Despite the fact that last week he couldn't even pronounce it and kept shouting something about "the women", his take is surprisingly reasoned and well-informed. It's. . . . . it's almost scary.

Quick segue has Rose largely smashing her way through the 90's, and we have to agree.

Last of the sammies as Rose debuts her research and theories on the Yuba Five. She's got some good points. Chef brought evidence too. No effing around. Johnson & Johnson maybe solve the case. Boom.

In a TinklEd Rose switches gears at the last moment and baits Chef into wildly inappropriate jokes.

In another shocking development, we have another seriously helpful ep here with a great homeschool update. We've been dancing around this for a bit, and we're finally debuting our third and maybe most important homeschool themed segment: SchedulEd.
SchedulEd deals with the logistics, the everyday deets that make managing a homeschool from both a teacher and a student perspective so intimidating. We break it down into digestible segments dealing with things like test prep and, of course, scheduling priorities.
In our first SchedulEd, we talk about Senior Photos. We also have a pre-event check in for Rose, who is going to a huge dance event as a student and a choreographer.

For a segue, Chef and Chat GPT team up and uncover another Bermuda Triangle style spooky zone. Its sounds deranged. Might actually be onto something, which is also scary.

As a Chef and a foodie, we're stoked fall is here & talking fall foods and trends in ReviewEd.

In a perfect Generational take on entertainment, Chef's tip out is a TV show, and Rose's tip out is a YouTube show.

See you one more time this October for Spookisode III.
