• The Edmonton Oilers rollercoaster experience
    Mar 12 2025

There is no better time in your week than when the notification comes through that a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never has been posted on your favourite podcast app. This week, we're discussing the Oilers' struggles, scoring issues, my trip to Toronto, and much more.

I started this week's episode of BLTN with an explanation of why I'm recording a day early and what I'll be up to in Toronto over the next few days. As much as I enjoy living on a plane these days, the same can not be said for red-eye flights, which is what I'll be taking tonight to head out east. Will I sleep on the plane? Unlikely. Will I complain about it the entire time I'm in Toronto? Yes. Yes, I will. On the bright side, Survivor is back for another season, which means another handful of weeks where I get to swoon over my new hero, Jeff Probst.

Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I started with a breakdown of Monday's loss to the Sabres and how it's truly puzzling that Edmonton continues to struggle against mediocre opponents. Despite starting hot as a pistol, our boys couldn't beat Buffalo's goaltender with any of their early chances, which seemed to put them in a funk. I also covered the fanbase's reaction to what Stan Bowman did at the trade deadline, and how it always makes me laugh how angry we get regardless of what the GM actually gets done.

Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails that were as entertaining as they were all over the map. The inbox was so funny again this week, and I got plenty of laughs from your ideas, feedback, and voicemails. As always, I sat back and laughed while listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

  • Oilers are in full free fall ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline
    Mar 5 2025

With the Edmonton Oilers looking like a hot mess on the ice, there was plenty to discuss on this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never. On today's podcast, we covered the Trent Frederic trade, what to expect at the NHL trade deadline, frustration on the ice, and much more.

I kicked off this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never with a random collection of topics, including what we have planned for Friday's trade deadline, workshopping gift ideas for myself ahead of my birthday, and offering another tale of being every day fancy. Even though this bit is just getting started on the podcast, I already love having you fine folks sending me DMs about times when you've scored amazing deals.

Turning the podcast to the Edmonton Oilers, it's hard not to feel discouraged right now based on how shitacular the team is playing. Not only did the team lose its sixth game in their last seven tries last night against the Ducks, but they looked completely down and out without much fight to turn things around. Losing is one thing, but looking completely dejected while the tailspin is happening is another problem altogether. I also spent some time on the Trent Frederic trade, what Stan Bowman may do at the trade deadline, and much more.

Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about the trade deadline before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails that were all over the map. The inbox was so funny again this week, and I got plenty of laughs from your ideas, feedback, and voicemails. As always, I sat back and laughed while listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

  • The Oilers may never win another hockey game
    Feb 27 2025

It's Wednesday afternoon, and the Edmonton Oilers are struggling, which means there is plenty to talk about in today's episode of Better Lait Than Never. On this week's podcast, I discuss the Oilers' four-game losing streak, Leon Draisaitl's heater, trade deadline needs, and much more.

I kicked off this week's podcast by thanking the Gords for snapping the streak of cold weather we've been battling in Edmonton over the last two weeks. It may be a small thing, but just being able to go outside and walk my dog this week has been a huge win. I also took listeners behind the scenes a little bit about what we're working on ahead of the trade deadline, including our Daily Faceoff Trade Deadline special.

Turning the podcast to the Oilers, it doesn't take much searching to see how upset the fanbase is right now after a run of putrid games put the team on their first four-game losing streak of the season. It's not all bad news, though, as Leon Draisaitl continues to light the world on fire, and Matthew Savoie is looking like he could be a damned good player for a long time. That said, with only two weeks left until the trade deadline, a lot of us are getting antsy about what Stan Bowman may or may not do at the league's annual swap 'n shop.

Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a pair of guest Righteous Sack Beatings, before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails that were all over the map. The inbox was alive again this week, and I got plenty of laughs from your ideas, feedback, and voicemails. As always, I sat back and laughed while listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

  • Canada vs. USA, Matthew Savoie travels with the Oilers, and Connor McDavid
    Feb 19 2025

It's Wednesday afternoon, and I missed the podcast last week, which means there's plenty to talk about in today's episode of Better Lait Than Never. On this week's podcast, I'm discussing the 4 Nations Final, Matthew Savoie's hot second half to his season, my love for Brandon Hagel, and much more.

After missing an episode last week, I'm back with a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to recap what's been happening over the last couple of weeks. Starting with my trip to Montreal, I gave some insight about why I was even there, some of the meetings we had, and what it was like to go to my first game at the Bell Centre. I know I said a bunch of times that I wasn't excited about the tournament, but it's amazing how quickly that changed after only a single game.

To start off the news, I looked at some of the latest Oilers news now that the boys are back on the ice. From there, I offered a quick preview of Thursday's Canada/USA 4 Nations Final. Even though that game doesn't really mean a whole lot in terms of the overall hockey history, there's little doubt that both nations are fired up to be facing off against each other in the final. Based on the hype for tomorrow's rematch, you'd almost think this was an Olympic final or something, and I love every minute of it.

Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a guest Raighteous Sack Beatings from Dooks, before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails that were all over the map. The inbox was busier this week after I missed a show, and I got plenty of laughs from your ideas, feedback, and voicemails. As always, I sat back and laughed while listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

  • Viktor Arvidsson needs to get going, and two more Oilers games before the break
    Feb 6 2025

It's Wednesday afternoon, meaning it's time for a fresh episode of the world's greatest podcast. On this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never, I'm begging Connor McDavid to shoot more, wondering when Viktor Arvidsson will stop falling down, and wading through the noise surrounding Stuart Skinner.

I kicked off the Wednesday episode of BLTN with a recap of the week, including my gripes with the weather, the Real Life golf league, and a tease about a former Oiler who could soon be working with us. I also followed through on my promise to give away a BLTN hoodie for a listener who sent me a picture of their podcast review. I also promised to do these more often because they really do help the podcast grow, and I also want to keep rewarding listeners for playing along.

Turning the podcast back toward the Oilers, I started with a quick recap of Tuesday's game against the St. Louis Blues. The Oilers almost lost that one due to a four-minute stretch of disastrous hockey in the third period, so I couldn't help but wonder what's going on with these in-game lulls lately. If I'm putting my detective's hat on for a minute, it almost seems like we've got a flu running through the team right now or something.

Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a pair of guest Righteous Sack Beatings, before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails that were all over the map. The inbox was slow and steady again this week, but I still got plenty of laughs from your ideas, feedback, and voicemails. As always, I sat back and laughed while listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

  • Connor McDavid is hot, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is too, and only posts can stop Leon Draisaitl
    Jan 29 2025

Better Lait Than Never is the best part of your Wednesday, isn't it? Of course it is. This week, we're recapping the Jasper Pond Hockey tournament, praising Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, taking your voicemails, and a bunch more.

After the wildfires devastated Jasper last summer, we understandably didn't know that the pond hockey tournament at the Jasper Park Lodge would be held this year. Yet, as the months rolled along, our friends at Tourism Jasper told us that we'd be heading back for the fourth consecutive January, and I could not have been more excited to get back out there. As always, the tournament couldn't have been more fun.

Looking at our beloved Edmonton Oilers, how could I not start with the return of Connor McDavid? After three games in jail, McDavid returned to the lineup against the Seattle Kraken and made an impact on the scoresheet almost immediately. It was another one of those games where the boys were flat to start for whatever reason, and thanks to a tying from No. 97, they were able to rally back for a third straight win.

Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about paper straws before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails that were all over the map. The inbox was nicely quiet again this week, but I still got plenty of laughs from your ideas, feedback, and voicemails. As always, I sat back and laughed while listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

  • Connor McDavid's suspension, Oilers lose two straight, and a Dollars for Dogs thank you
    Jan 23 2025

Wednesday afternoon can only mean one thing: The weird niche podcast you listen to is back with a fresh episode. On this week's Better Lait Than Never, I wrapped up the Dollars for Dogs campaign with a thank you to everyone who participated, looked at Connor McDavid's three-game suspension, and much more.

I kicked off this week's podcast by thanking everyone who participated in the Dollars for Dogs campaign with me this past week. Despite the absurdity of the bit, we raised over $6000 for SCARS Animal Rescue here in Edmonton, and I couldn't be happier about how things went. Now that this is over, the trick will be to get myself back on a regular diet without shocking my insides after a gruelling week of salt and dogs.

Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I started the news with a quick recap of the Connor McDavid suspension. Given that everyone has already talked about McDavid getting three games at length, I shifted focus to the hilarious statement the Oilers made yesterday in solidarity with their captain. I don't know why the team thought they needed to put something out the way they did, but I sure had a healthy chuckle watching the internet overreact again.

Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with another guest Righteous Sack Beating from Dooks before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. The inbox was quiet again for the fourth consecutive week, but I still got a healthy chuckle from your ideas, feedback, and voicemails. As always, I sat back and laughed while listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

  • Dollars for Dogs: Final Update
    Jan 21 2025

Eight days, 25 hot dogs, and over $6000 raised for charity. What a week!

Since I’m doing the Dollars for Dogs charity campaign this week, I figured I’d stop in with a few additional updates from the podcast to keep everyone updated on how it’s going. How many hot dogs did I eat? How much money have we raised for SCARS? How close am I to quitting the whole thing?
