In a remote community on the Dampier Peninsula, Kate meets Indigenous elder Irene Davey, whose daughter Sara-Lee went missing in Broome on January 14, 1997. That same night, Dorrough is also in Broome, his Navy ship is moored at the jetty. After a night out, he tries bringing Sara-Lee back to his ship. She is never seen again.

The young Maori woman had migrated to Australia from New Zealand as child and had fallen into addiction before being murdered. At the time, Dorrough is in Sydney. His Kombi van is parked near where Rachael’s body is found, but no one is arrested over the killing. Soon after, Dorrough moves to Queensland.

As Kate and Dan dig deeper into the case, the same psychiatrist now questions his assessment, saying Dorrough may have had multiple personality disorder linked to the sexual abuse he suffered as a child. Does the diagnosis help explain any of Dorrough’s behaviour? Does it excuse it? After his release from prison, Dorrough is on the move again.
