Bondcast

By: James Harrison Zach Syme
  • Summary

  • Hosts Zach and James delve into the James Bond film and literary universe, one subject at a time. Throughout Bondcast we’ll examine all sides of 007, framing them in their changing cultural, historical, and political contexts. We’ll mine the source material for both the obvious and the obscure, and as we learn more about Bond, our hope is that we’ll also learn more about the world he inhabits. Tune in for film trivia tidbits, historical context, cultural hot-takes, and bad accents.

Episodes
  • Episode 006: Licence to...Drive?
    Oct 26 2024

The 007 films contain no fewer than 60 car chases. In this episode, Zach and James look at the cars that star throughout the franchise, many of which have become stars in their own right. The Bond universe's obsession with cars stems from Ian Fleming's own fixation with four wheels. We also explore the relationship between auto companies and EON productions, as well as what cars and driving mean for the character of our favourite secret agent.

  • Episode 005: Keep your friends close and your Henchmen closer
    Sep 28 2024

Behind every great villain, there's a great henchperson. You need a good one if you're going to hatch an world-threatening evil plan. Make sure they're a kinda bizarre, unwaveringly loyal, and willing to take a little abuse. Hopefully they can take out that pesky 007, or at least have a really cool death scene trying.

Plus, Bondcast presents the inaugural HENCHIES awards, the only award show dedicated to excellence in henchpersonry.

  • Episode 004: The Architects of our pain
    Sep 1 2024

"The distance between insanity and genius is measured by success" - Elliot Carver, Tomorrow Never Dies.

What would 007 be without a deliciously evil arch-villain with a world-threatening plot in need of foiling? Bond villains tend to be ugly inside and out, cruel, power hungry megalomaniacs that take the form of whatever the times deem most unworthy.

In this episode we look at what identifies a villain as being so darn evil, and the problems that result from painting with such a wide brush. Finally, we wonder if there are any real-life Bond villains among us among the tech barons, dictators, and media magnates that kind of (definitely) fit the bill.
