  • From Depression to Determination: Black Men Breaking Generational Curses
    Jan 22 2024

In this episode, I have a candid conversation with a group of black men about their experiences with depression and anxiety. As someone who has never personally experienced these mental health issues, I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of what it feels like for them as black men, especially considering the societal expectations that often discourage men from expressing their emotions.

One of the guests begins by sharing his initial skepticism about depression and anxiety, viewing them as mere excuses or cop-outs. However, his perspective changed when he witnessed someone with social anxiety breaking down uncontrollably when confronted. This prompted him to reflect on his own experiences and eventually led to his own battle with anxiety during the pandemic.

Another guest shares his journey with anxiety and depression, which started in 2022. He attributes his anxiety to feelings of inadequacy and failure in his professional life, constantly changing jobs and struggling to maintain a positive image on his resume. Additionally, he reveals that his use of moonshine, a depressant, further exacerbated his mental health issues.

The conversation takes a turn as the guests discuss the unique challenges faced by men when it comes to mental health. They highlight the tendency for men to internalize their thoughts and emotions, leading to a constant burden on their shoulders. One guest even mentions undergoing sleep tests to address his sleep disturbances caused by his racing thoughts.

However, amidst their struggles, the guests emphasize the importance of support and understanding from loved ones. One guest expresses gratitude for his wife's unwavering support and encouragement throughout his journey. He acknowledges the need for reciprocity in a relationship, understanding that being a real man means knowing when to support and when to be supported.

The episode concludes with a powerful reflection on the transformative power of prioritizing the well-being of others. One guest shares how he now wakes up every morning with the intention of making his wife's and children's day better, putting his own needs aside. He acknowledges the challenges of self-care during periods of depression but emphasizes the joy he finds in being a husband and father.

Through this honest and vulnerable conversation, listeners gain insight into the experiences of black men dealing with depression and anxiety. The guests' stories highlight the importance of support, understanding, and humility in navigating mental health challenges, ultimately redefining what it means to be a real man.

  • Ep.1: Faith, Family, and Facial Hair: A Candid Conversation with Pastor Garrison
    Dec 26 2023

In this episode of the Born Moguls Podcast, we had an insightful and profound conversation with our special guest, MarQuise Garrison, also known as Pastor Garrison or the "Beard Whisperer." Our discussion revolved around the challenges and intricacies of faith, particularly within the context of men's lives.

We kicked off the episode with a light-hearted segment where MarqQuise humorously addressed the plight of men struggling to grow beards, offering tips like shaving often, exfoliating, and having good genetics. MarQuise shared his personal journey with his beard, which he has been growing for four years.

The conversation then took a serious turn as we delved into the topic of faith, one of the pillars of our 6F method. Both MarQuise and our co-host Lamont have served as pastors, providing a unique perspective on the role of faith in leadership and personal growth.

MarQuise recounted his path to Christianity, which began in his childhood. He described his experience of being called to preach, which came to him in a dream, marking a pivotal moment in his life. Despite the challenges he faced, including a period of rebellion during his college years, MarQuise's faith remained a central part of his identity.

Lamont shared his own experiences as a young pastor, highlighting the pressures and expectations placed upon him by his community. He spoke candidly about the reasons he stepped down from his pastoral role, including the realization that he was serving to please others rather than following his true calling.

The episode also touched on the controversial topic of pastors accumulating wealth through the church. Both MarQuise and Lamont expressed their views on the matter, emphasizing the importance of pastors receiving a fair salary for their work without exploiting their congregation.

As we wrapped up the episode, we discussed the impact of mega churches on communities and the importance of delivering a pure message of salvation. The conversation underscored the need for self-awareness and humility in one's spiritual journey.

Stay tuned for the next part of this interview series, where we will continue to explore the intersection of faith and leadership.
