    Matt Browell-Hook is the Sector Director responsible for the Energy business within Costain as part of the Natural resources Division. Matt is an experienced energy professional with over 18 years of experience in offshore and onshore hydrocarbon, renewable and major projects arenas with leadership of consulting, engineering and delivery teams across the UK and Europe. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and sits on the leadership boards of both Costain as well as further education and STEM organisations.

    Matt is a passionate leader and engineer who believes the societal demands for Net Zero lie within the gift our engineering talent in the UK.  A proud advocate of a just energy transition approach and promoting a diverse, inclusive, and curious approach to tackling the biggest challenge of our age in decarbonising the UK.

  • 2: Project Collaboration to Deliver Net Zero

    John Fotherby is Chair, European Construction Institute (ECI) - a multi-disciplinary community that facilitates the exchange and sharing of knowledge, ideas, expertise and practices amongst stakeholders in the Engineering Construction Sector that can drive continuous improvement in project performance, delivery and results. With a career spanning five decades, John’s background transcends project delivery and claims and dispute management – he has held the role of project director for EPC contractors. 

    John is a partner in Kingsfield Academy whose primary business is designing and delivering effective training programmes for engineering construction stakeholders’ and their project delivery teams. Currently, he also provides coaching to project teams and acts in arbitration as an expert witness on project management.

    Tony Maplesden is a chartered engineer with over 40 years of experience in the delivery of engineering construction projects. A fellow of the Association for Project Management (APM), the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Leadership & Management,  he has a qualification in management psychology and is a qualified management coach/mentor.  

    Now semi-retired, during his career he has worked in many senior management roles and delivered projects in a number of industry sectors. In the final stage of his career, he worked in the UK Oil & Gas industry based in Aberdeen, during which time he held the positions of Offshore Regional Chair and Chairman of the Project Management Steering Group with the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB).

    In 2016, Tony played a significant role in the design and development of the ECITB Project Collaboration Toolkit and drafted much of the Toolkit content. He has since been coordinating work associated with piloting of the Toolkit and is presently supporting its application to major projects across a number of UK industry sectors.

    Hydrogen is considered one of the low carbon energy solutions and an essential element to help meet the transition to net zero.   Debnath Pal from Stopford and Caragh McWhirr from Xodus discuss hydrogen in the context of the Engineering Construction Industry and the implications for skills demand for the current and future workforce.

    It’s important to understand the case for the hydrogen economy including technology, social acceptance and investment needs to support delivery of the UK’s hydrogen ambitions. What actions government and industry can take to facilitate its deployment and prepare the workforce.

    Debnath Pal is Stopford’s Director of Consultancy Services and brings more than 30 years of consulting experience in the chemicals, oil & gas, fuel storage and the renewable energy sectors.

    Deb joined Stopford in 1999 and is responsible for the strategic growth of the company’s consultancy activities in the areas of Compliance, Low Carbon Solutions and Advisory Services.  At Stopford he has also led the development of the services in the hydrogen market, where Stopford has extensive experience in both the production and uses of hydrogen.  Hydrogen “production” knowledge gained from developing their own green technology and “uses” undertaking technical due diligence studies on the hydrogen supply chain and delivering BEIS funded fuel switching projects for the safe introduction and integration of hydrogen into existing industrial processes.

    Deb is a Chartered Chemical Engineer and a Fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineers.

    Caragh McWhirr leads Xodus’ Hydrogen Xcellence Hub and has over 20 years experience in the energy sector. Caragh is Head of Hydrogen Strategy for Xodus globally. This role involves leading a small team of hydrogen experts (commercial, engineering and market insights) monitoring policy and markets globally, and providing strategic direction to the rest of the business related to hydrogen opportunities The Hydrogen Xcellence Hub team are custodians of expertise on hydrogen and hydrogen projects, both technically and commercially, and provide tools and expertise relating to Hydrogen to the rest of the business.
