An ancient artifact that can only be described as a giant door, inset into the ocean floor. It became known as the Vault. A gigantic enigma, buried and forgotten...nineteen thousand feet down. Just the kind of thing that would interest the galaxy's most powerful corporation, Maas-Dorian. To study the artifact, the company built a massive, self-contained, secret laboratory base surrounding it. That base is named Fathom. It's objective: unlock the secrets of the artifact and discover what it holds. A group of scientists, engineers, and workers led by Dr. Eva Graff and Commander Joe Freeman have been working on that task for almost a year, but with little to show for it. The Vault has yet to give up its secrets, and their employers are beginning to lose patience. Add to that, some on the base say they hear...voices. Inside the signal the Vault is broadcasting. Hundreds of them. Thousands. Whispering and chittering of a desire to be let out... But none of it holds sway over a corporation interested only in power and profit, even if it knows all too well that some mysteries should remain buried. And that some doors should never be opened... A movie in audio

The quality of this is beyond amazing. As a person that “sees” what I read or hear this made me experience an Hollywood quality movie with the audio landscape it paints. Do yourself a favor if you like sci-fi and horror….LISTEN.

interesting story when you can hear it

I was aw actually enjoying the story and the acting on this but the sound mixing made it very hard to hear with the constant loud crashes and alarms. I gave up on episode 3

dissappointing

great premise but dragged out and the SFX is interesting but so often it's trying to be real life and ends up like a phone call in a hurricane for entire episodes. ran out of ideas

Alarms, Gasping, Greatness and Cliches

There is a lot of good about this series, its enjoyable and entertaining. Would I recommend it? Well, yes and no.

Basically a big box on the sea floor gets found, people try to open it, and the story is about the survivors overcoming a disaster at the underwater base (called Fathom) which is related to the box.

The sound design and acting is outstanding, all the SFX are really clear and its engaging. I was entertained, I liked the tale. The actors carry the story, they are really convincing and are very talented.

However there are a lot of sci-fi cliches which the series tries to own and do something new with. However, the voice actors are the ones doing all the heavy lifting and I think thats what makes it partly compelling.

Before I get into spoilers, I would say, sure give it a try and the moment you find yourself sighing and being annoyed by the story beats, its probably a good time to stop. It doesn't get any better in that regard past Episode 2. Also brace yourself for near constant gasping and banging sounds, to the point of distraction.

SPOILER ALERT

I'm reminded of the quote: He's dead. Dave, everybody is dead. Everybody is dead, Dave. There is so much death, you just switch off to it. Its not an acting problem. It's a story problem. Want to root for a hero? Bad luck! They're dead now.

There are plot holes you will notice. One example: The Company Agent has a live conversation with his partner (who is on the surface) yet no SOS had been sent by the Fathom base at that point. Then the main characters then decide to GO to a communications array to contact the surface because the base exploded hours ago. Why was this not done in the hours during which people on Fathom were able to contact the surface for rescue to be initiated? No one mentions this at all. There are few other plot holes that I noticed, which to the producers defence, might have been explained but were lost in the endless amounts of distortion, alarms, creaking, water and beep-boop SFX overlaying everything. Sufficed to say, Fathom's main let down for me is the black goo. Whats in the vault? How mysterious! Its going so well and then, uh oh, its a black goo that dissolves everything. Come on. Why establish a naughty computer as being the baddy and then hit the 'black goo' panic button? A nasty AI is a fun concept to explore, and Fathom was doing good with it, but kind of bailed on the idea. I just think it loses itself in its own cliches far too often.
