Jesus Delivered to Pilate

Matthew 27:1-2

1 When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:

2 And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

The account of Jesus being delivered to Pontius Pilate is found in all four Gospels: Matthew 27:1-2, 11-26, Mark 15:1-15, Luke 23:1-25, and John 18:28-40. This event marks the beginning of Jesus’ formal trial before the Roman governor.

1. Jesus Before the Sanhedrin: After His arrest, Jesus was tried by the Jewish religious leaders (the Sanhedrin). They accused Him of blasphemy for claiming to be the Son of God.
2. Delivered to Pilate:

• Because the Jewish authorities lacked the legal authority to carry out a death sentence under Roman rule, they brought Jesus to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea.

• The charge they presented to Pilate was not blasphemy but treason, claiming that Jesus declared Himself to be a king, thus opposing Caesar.

Peter Denies Jesus

Matthew 26:69-75

69 Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee.

70 But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest.

71 And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.

72 And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.

73 And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee.

74 Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew.

75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

• Human Weakness: Peter’s failure shows the fragility of human resolve under pressure
• Repentance and Forgiveness: Despite his denial, Peter later seeks forgiveness and is restored by Jesus after the resurrection (John 21:15-19).
• Fulfillment of Prophecy: Jesus’ prediction underscores His divine knowledge.

Jesus Before Caiaphas

Matthew 26:57-68

The Sanhedrin’s inability to find liars who would aid them in condemning Christ to death was a significant challenge. While they discovered several individuals capable of fabricating stories about Christ, none of them could fabricate lies that would benefit the enemies of Christ. Furthermore, other Gospel accounts mention that the lying witnesses were unable to agree on their fabricated narratives.

Only falsehood could condemn Christ
