Day-8: Assertiveness-1 Don't Say "Yes" to Make Others Happy!

  • Summary

  • In this lesson, Pushpendra introduces the most pertinent ideal of assertiveness. Assertiveness is the ability to say 'no' when one wishes to say so, without hurting or violating the rights of others. Being assertive in situations, both personal and professional, is not only desirable, but significantly important as it minimizes stress, conflict and leads to harmony. This lesson emphasizes on asserting to make one's own choice as real happiness depends on three C's, namely, choices, chances and changes. It encourages the learners to initially practice assertiveness in three different situations. It recommends that in order to make one's choice, one should never say 'yes,' if s/he has to say 'no.' Besides, it concludes with the message that if one has to make a choice between fear and growth, one should always choose growth. The following questions are meant to develop more understanding of the topic. The answers to these questions will not be used for grading. 1. Recall a time when you wanted to say "No," but you ended up saying "Yes" 2. Can you easily say "No" to others? If not, why? 3. What do you think it means to be Assertive? Why is it important?
