  • Summary

  • The so-called “King of the Party Record,” Redd Foxx got his start as a comic telling some of the most outrageous, X-rated jokes audiences had ever heard, going on to sell an estimated 20 million records. His journey from street corner singer to blue comic would ultimately bring him into every home in America as the cranky-but-lovable Fred Sanford. On the hit show Sanford and Son, Foxx not only broke barriers for Black performers on TV, he also challenged what issues could be centered in the sitcom format, tackling questions of race, poverty, and discrimination.

A good listen about great people!

This is an all round good listen... thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely recommend.

For me, I began this show having heard of most of these entertainers, but mostly from references or imitations; Now I feel fully educated on their importance and feel excited about rediscovering some of their material.

For a person who isn't really sure who these entertainers are, or aren't very familiar with black comedy, this is a great show which breaks everything down and takes you through the history in an easy and digestible way.

And for someone who knows exactly who these pioneers are, this show is filled with guest commentaries and interviews with other comics who take you on a journey that feels like a grand tribute to these kings and queens of comedy.
