George R. R. Martin: The Master of Westeros George R. R. He is also the author of several other science fiction and fantasy novels and short stories. Martin was born on September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey. After graduating from Marist High School in 1966, Martin attended Northwestern University, where he earned bachelor's (1970) and master's (1971) degrees in journalism. While at Northwestern, he began writing short stories, and his first professional sale, "The Hero," was published in Galaxy magazine in 1971. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Martin continued to write short stories and novels, gaining recognition for his imaginative world-building and character development.
