• Episode 109: What's Really Happening with Patrik Laine?
    Mar 13 2025

    In this episode, we discuss...

RECORDED BEFORE THE GAME VS THE KRAKKEN

Habs had a quiet Trade Deadline and it's not necessarily a bad thing. While it wasn't an eventful trade deadline for the Habs, it sent a clear message that the Habs are slowly coming out of this rebuild. They did not sacrifice any key pieces and assets to acquire rentals, and they seem to feel comfortable with the assets and picks they have.

Patrik Laine was feeling under the weather with flu-like symptoms. Once again this did not stop the rumors from going around about it. It seems that it doesn't matter what team he is on, there is a negative perception about him that is not going away. The latest RUMORS suggest that he and MSL are at odds with one another, or that he is having late nights gaming, or that he has no love for the sport anymore. At this point, the only way he can get away from these rumors is to show up, be committed, and play to his fullest potential.

Lane Hutson is a superstar already. You can disagree or attack us if you want, but he is in the top 7 in scoring among all defensemen in the NHL, AS A ROOKIE (tied for 4th). How soon should the Habs sign him to his next contract? How much should they sign him for?

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: When the time comes, what will Lane Hutson's next contract look like?

  • Episode 108: Caufield for Dobson? Has Slaf Found his Game? Rantanen, Demidov
    Feb 26 2025

    In this episode, we discuss...

A local radio station (not naming who) brought up the rumor that Dobson may be available for the right price. They mused over the idea of Dobson being traded to the Montreal Canadiens. During their segment they mentioned that to get Dobson, the Habs would likely have to send Caufield the other way. Would we trade Cole Caufield for Noah Dobson?

Since the 4 Nations tournament, the Habs have played two games (Ottawa and Carolina) and won both games. Slafkovsky has scored in both games and has been a beast. Before the season resumed, he stated "to have success in the NHL, you have to play like Brady Tkachuk." In the first game after making that statement, VS Ottawa, he scored a goal, got into a fight, was the first star of the game, and finished the game with 8 hits. He is definitely more engaged. Has he found his game? Is this the version of Slaf we will see more often than not?

There are some rumors circulating around Rantanen and Carolina. Apparently, during the 4 Nations tournament, the Carolina Hurricanes submitted an offer to Rantanen. He has yet to sign and has let Carolina know that he still needs time. The latest rumors/speculation going around is that Carolina may consider flipping Rantanen again by the NHL Trade Deadline. Assuming he makes it to Free Agency, should the Habs open their wallet and/or give him a blank check? Would we sign Rantanen to 13+ million dollars?

Demidov should be signing his entry-level contract when his season with SKA is done. All analysts, scouts, podcasters, members of media, etc. are all saying that Demidov could be the Habs next 100 pts player. He has all the skill and talent to be the first 100 pts player since Mats Naslund. If he hits his ceiling, and scores 100 pts, at the end of his ELC, would you give him the contract that 100 pts player would typically get?

We play the game "Hab for a Minute". Who is our favorite former Habs player, who played minimum 1 game and maximum half a season?

  • Episode 107: Dylan Cozens to the Habs? Jake Evans to NJ?
    Feb 6 2025

    In this episode, we discuss...

A couple of games ago, Martin St. Louis benched Patrik Laine and Kirby Dach. Was benching them a smart move? Will this affect Laine in a negative way, or will he understand the message?

Kevin Weekes posted a tweet that there is some interest across the NHL for Buffalo Sabres' center Dylan Cozens and apparently, the Habs are one of the teams interested in Dylan Cozens. Should the Habs trade for him? What should they trade to acquire him (if they do)? Don't they have a similar project in Kirby Dach?

Apparently, New Jersey is really interested in Jake Evans. Some have even tried linking Simon Nemec (Which is crazy to us) to the Habs in some kind of deal that involves Jake Evans. Evans is a proven commodity, and you know what you're getting with him. Should the Habs trade him, or should they keep him?

  • Episode 106: Quarter Century Team, Goalie Controversy? Heineman Underrated?
    Jan 25 2025

    In this episode, we discuss...

The NHL and the Montreal Canadiens released their quarter century teams. We give our thoughts and opinions on teams 1 and 2. Should there be any changes or other players to consider? Some have suggested that Subban should be on team 1 and Weber on team 2. Do we agree?

Jakub Dobes has played 5 games and won all 5 games. He looks cool, calm, and collected. Montembeault has had some good games and struggled in others. He is still the Habs number 1 goalie (for now), but with Dobes playing the way that he has, do the Habs have a goalie controversy, or do they simply have a goalie tandem that MSL can finally rely on?

The bottom 6 lines look very different without Emil Heineman and with Pezzetta. Thankfully Heineman is ok from an unexpected accident and that his injury is not long term. Since his injury was announced the bottom 6 has not looked the same. We discuss how underrated Emil Heineman is and his impact to the Habs roster.

While we were recording this episode, the tweets were coming in about the Rantanen trade. Near the end of the episode, you can see our live reaction of the 3-way blockbuster trade between Colorado, Chicago, and Carolina.

We play a quick answer speed round game. No time to think of an answer, just the first answer that comes to mind.

  • Episode 105: Is Patrik Laine Long-Term Hab?
    Jan 15 2025

    In this episode, we discuss...

Alex Carrier has made a significant impact to the Montreal Canadiens. This underrated and under the radar acquisition has paid immediate dividends and gives the Canadiens a lot of flexibility with David Savard and how they approach the NHL Trade Deadline. Can and will this acquisition go down as one of HuGo's best?

At the start of the season, many fans (including us) were saying that the Habs needed veteran players, needed to stabilize the defense, needed a right-hand shot defenseman, quarterback defenseman, needed a top 6 player, etc. They addressed many of those needs with Laine (return from injury), Lane Hutson and Will Carrier. What is the next immediate need or upgrade?

Looking at the present and a little bit into the future, do the Habs have any superstar players? What does the word superstar mean to you?

Currently, Laine is playing at a 52-goal pace. He is definitely an impact player and if he stays healthy, he can still reach that POTENTIAL to be a superstar in the NHL. You can see that because of his name, style of play, and shot, that players keep a keen eye on him during the game. He has one year left beyond this season and will likely cost a "pretty penny." Do we think that he will be a member of the Habs beyond next season?

Will he and can he still be a superstar? Is Patrik Laine a long-term hab?

  • Episode 104: Slaf Whipping Boy, Dobes Arriving, In the Mix
    Jan 5 2025

    In this episode, we discuss...

The Montreal Canadiens have been on fire lately. They have won 4 of their last 5 games. All four wins were against the last 4 Stanley cup winners. These were games that most people and analysts expected them to lose. Currently, they are one point away from the final wild card spot and are officially in the mix. For those hoping for a top 5 pick in the upcoming draft this recent surge spells disaster. For those that were hoping that the Habs would take a step forward this season, are excited and eyeing that last playoff spot.

Juraj Slafkovsky is still putting up points, but the eye test has not matched the production. Some Habs fans are really starting to lose their patience with him. Some seem to forget how young Slafkovsky and that he is actually younger than Lane Hutson (by 1 month). At only the age of 20 years old, is it fair to get on Slafkovsky's case? Has he undeservingly become the new whipping boy?

Habs goaltender Jakub Dobes is making history. In a very small sample size, he has looked incredible. Currently, he is 2-0, has allowed only 1 goal in both of those games VS two of the best teams in the NHL. While it has only been 2 games, should the Montreal Canadiens continue to search for a veteran goalie? Or perhaps Monty is now the veteran goalie?

  • Episode 103: Best Habs Powerplay of Our Lifetime?
    Dec 23 2024

    In this episode, we discuss...

The Montreal Canadiens traded Justin Barron to the Nashville Predators for veteran defenseman Alexandre Carrier. Carrier has already played 2 games with the Habs and you can already see his impact. We give our thoughts on the trade, Carrier, and Justin Barron's time with the Habs.

Jake Evans has been on fire lately. As it stands right now, Evans is 4th on the team in scoring. It's a contract year for Evans. Should the Habs re-sign him or trade him? If the Habs were to re-sign him, what would a contract look like?

Sam Montembeault played in back-to-back games. Nowadays it is very rare for a goalie to play both games in a back-to-back. Clearly, MSL and the coaching staff have lost confidence and Cayden Primeau (rightfully so). What's next for Primeau?

Patrik Laine has scored 8 goals in his first 9 games with the Montreal Canadiens. All 8 goals came on the powerplay and since coming back from his injury the Habs powerplay looks completely different. We haven't seen the powerplay with this much movement and excitement in years, maybe decades. Are we witnessing the best Habs powerplay in our lifetime (35-40 years)?

  • Episode 102: Are the Habs Really in "The Mix?"
    Dec 9 2024

    In this episode, we discuss...

Whether the Habs are really in the mix or not. Laine has not looked out of place and did not waste any time by scoring a pair of goals, but even with Laine in the lineup, are the Habs still a lottery team or an in "the mix" team.

There has been a lot of attention on Head Coach Martin St. Louis. Some people questioning his decisions (or indecisions). Do we still believe that he is the guy to continue developing this young Habs team? What to do with Dach and Slafkovsky?

The Habs have played about 30% of their games for the 2024-25 season. At this point, should we hope that they finish bottom 5 or push hard for a wild card spot?

We discuss all that and more.

Question(s) of the week: Barring any possibility of a trade, what would you do with Kirby Dach? What would you do to get him going?

In your opinion, is MSL still the guy to develop this team during this rebuild?
