  • On Sept. 19, 1981, the K.I.D.S Radio Show premiered on KSPI FM radio station broadcasting out of Stillwater, Oklahoma. The radio sitcom/musical expertly blended clever, kid-friendly comedic stories with children’s genre song selections. The weekly radio show was the brainchild of Carolyn Meyer, a Stillwater Public Schools music specialist and Kel Pickens, an account rep for the radio station. Carolyn and Kel are releasing select episodes from the 1980s and 1990s in podcast form on Saturday mornings at 11 a.m., like the original radio show time.

    “KIDS Radio Show Christmas Special” first aired in December 1981

    This episode features an early version of the KIDS Radio theme song and the well-known Christmas Song White Christmas, a story song by Peter, Paul, and Mary. Show engineer Chris Cozort wishes everyone a Merry Christmas! Kel reads The Giving Tree story written by Shel Silverstein. Kel gives a Christmas wish.


    Carolyn Meyer’s 5th-grade music class students from Highland Park Elementary School sing a Christmas song recorded during a live performance at the school with Carolyn accompanying them on the piano, 5th grader Ch is Holt on drums, and 5th grader Jeremy Skidmore on bass.

    Miss Carolyn helps the KIDS Radio crew learn our language through song.

    Of note: The original reel-to-reel recording was not salvageable for digitization, so Carolyn and Kel proved they still got it and jumped into the studio to re-record their lines.
