Devan Seabaugh has been postponed for the fourth time, with a new pre-trial hearing set for November 22. Seabaugh, who was absent from the recent hearing, faces seven charges, including DUI, following an August incident where he allegedly hit a cyclist. His attorney requested the delay to gather more evidence. Seabaugh denies being intoxicated, claiming he was unaware of the bike lane due to inadequate signage. The cyclist involved suffered minor injuries and was unsure if he was struck by Seabaugh's vehicle. STORY 2: Marietta Super Proposes Weapons Detectors For Schools Marietta City Schools plans to implement weapons detectors in grades six through 12 following recent incidents involving firearms. Superintendent Grant Rivera proposed using pass-through detectors and AI weapons detection integrated with existing cameras. The initiative aims to enhance safety without disrupting school routines. The district is interviewing vendors and plans to operationalize the system soon. Additionally, the district will hire a second school resource officer and transition part-time officers to full-time roles. Safety measures include secured access, visitor screening, and an emergency alert app, with ongoing community engagement to ensure effective implementation. STORY 3: Cobb Commission Special Election Set for April A special election for two Cobb County Board of Commissioners seats is set for April 29, following a court ruling that invalidated previous elections due to an unconstitutional "home rule" map. The election will fill District 2 and District 4 seats, with candidates like Alicia Adams and Jaha Howard running for District 2. Incumbent Monique Sheffield will run for District 4. Rivera's base salary will increase to $269,742, with a total compensation package of $450,629, plus a $10,000 annual bonus. The board has consistently extended his contract since he began in 2017, aligning with Georgia's three-year limit on superintendent contracts. Board Chair Jeff DeJarnett praised Rivera for his efforts in improving district literacy rates, noting the progress as a model for the state. STORY 5: KSU and Wellstar Double Nursing Student Enrollment Kennesaw State University (KSU) and Wellstar Health System have doubled the enrollment at KSU's Wellstar School of Nursing over the past four years to address Georgia's nursing shortage. With a $9 million commitment from Wellstar, KSU increased its nursing enrollment from 512 in 2019-20 to 1,155 in 2023-24, hired 32 new faculty, and expanded course offerings. BREAK: CU of GA (06.26.24 CU OF GA FREE CHECKING_REV_FINAL) STORY 1: One in Custody After Man Stabbed in Marietta A man was stabbed in Marietta around 3:45 p.m. on Monday, with the incident occurring between a Wells Fargo bank and a Texaco gas station on Roswell Street. The victim, who sustained several wounds, was taken to the hospital in a conscious and alert state. Marietta Police have a person of interest in custody, but it's not confirmed if this individual is the suspect. No identifying details about the suspect or victim have been released. STORY 2: Police Chief Issues Statement After 89-Year-Old Found Dead The body of 89-year-old Patricia Miele was found in a pond at Kennesaw Memorial Park, three days after she went missing from her assisted care facility. Marietta Police Chief David Beam expressed condolences to her family, emphasizing the department's heartfelt efforts to find her. He thanked the Marietta Police and Fire Departments, other public safety agencies, and community members for their dedication in the search. Beam highlighted the community's support and partnership, urging continued prayers for Miele's family during this difficult time. STORY 3: 'May We Never Forget': Marietta Honors Veterans With Parade Hundreds gathered in Marietta Square for the annual Veterans Day parade, organized by the Horace Orr Post 29 of the American Legion and the city of Marietta. Despite the new look, the menu remains unchanged, featuring popular items like bandeja paisa and enchiladas. Manager Julian Henao plans to add more Colombian dishes. The reopening saw an overwhelming customer response, quickly filling the restaurant. La Carreta is open Tuesday through Sunday, located at 1252 Roswell Rd. in Marietta.     89-Year-Old Woman Still Missing in Marietta

    Marietta Police are still searching for Patricia Miele, 89, missing since Friday night from Greenwood Assisted Living on Whitlock Avenue. Miele, last seen at 11 p.m., was reported missing Saturday morning. Extensive search efforts by local police, the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, federal park rangers, and Georgia State Patrol have included drones, K9 units, helicopters, and watercraft, covering local establishments, neighborhoods, and Miele’s previous residence. Despite thorough searches and interviews, Miele remains missing. She is hearing impaired, without her glasses, and may be disoriented. Residents with outdoor cameras are urged to check footage from Friday night to Saturday morning. Miele was last seen wearing a purple floral shirt, blue jeans, and slip-on Sketcher shoes. There is no surveillance footage or physical evidence of her leaving the facility. Anyone with information is asked to contact 911.

    Lockheed Achieves Milestone in Unmanned Naval Aviation

    Lockheed Martin, the U.S. Navy, and General Atomics achieved a groundbreaking milestone in unmanned aviation with the first live control flight of a drone using the Unmanned Carrier Aviation Mission Control Station. The demonstration involved the General Atomics MQ-20 Avenger, an unmanned combat aircraft, controlled via Lockheed Skunk Works’ Multi-Domain Combat System autonomy platform. This system, developed by Skunk Works, offers autonomy, mission planning, and command capabilities. Navy pilots in Maryland successfully controlled the MQ-20 in California, showcasing beyond line-of-sight capabilities. This test marks a significant step in developing the control station, crucial for future Navy unmanned operations. John Clark of Skunk Works highlighted the collaboration's success in integrating the MQ-20 with UMCS, demonstrating common control and third-party platform integration. Lt. Steven Wilster emphasized the demo's importance in advancing unmanned naval aviation, crucial for addressing current and future threats.

Incumbent Randy Scamihorn, Brad Wheeler, and newcomer John Cristadoro secured victories, ensuring GOP leadership through at least 2026. The election highlighted debates over change versus stability, with Republicans emphasizing academic performance and Democrats advocating for leadership changes. Allegations of gerrymandering and significant campaign funding marked the election, with both parties receiving substantial support from various organizations. Defeated Democrats vowed to remain active in local education politics. STORY 2: Smyrna Socialist Wins Seat in Georgia Legislature Gabriel Sanchez, a self-identified Socialist, won a Georgia Legislature seat, defeating Republican Diane Jackson with 63% of the vote. Sanchez attributed his victory to voter engagement and a desire for change, focusing on workers' rights, affordable housing, and healthcare. He is the first Democratic Socialists of America-endorsed candidate to win a Georgia House seat since Julian Bond. Sanchez aims to advocate for working people and has criticized state financial support for large corporations. Despite her loss, Jackson expressed pride in her campaign's focus on common-sense policies and remains committed to representing her community. STORY 3: Phillips Unseats Cobb State Court Clerk Democrat Tahnicia Phillips is projected to win the Cobb State Court clerk race, defeating incumbent Republican Robin Bishop by 4%, with Phillips securing 52% of the vote. Phillips, a Marietta native with over 23 years of experience in Cobb's Magistrate Court, aims to modernize and make the court more accessible. She emphasized community engagement during her campaign. Bishop, who took over the clerk role in 2020, found the campaign schedule challenging but valued the connections made. Owens highlighted his achievements, such as receiving the Triple Crown Award and implementing new technology, as reasons for his support. Despite facing negativity and threats during the campaign, Owens remains committed to serving all residents, regardless of political affiliation. Cavender, who ran his campaign independently, expressed no regrets and acknowledged the challenge of balancing campaign efforts with family and work responsibilities. The election results will be certified on Nov. 12. STORY 5: Cobb County Water System Reports 1,300 Gallon Sewage Overflow The Cobb County Water System reported a 1,300-gallon wastewater overflow on Nov. 4 at 3134 Twin Lakes Drive NE in Marietta, caused by roots. The overflow, which lasted just over an hour, discharged into a tributary of Piney Grove Creek. Upon arrival, crews found a four-inch clean-out spilling and a manhole with a secured lid also overflowing. They used a jet machine to clear the blockage and applied lime to the affected area. Harris received over 225,906 votes in Cobb, compared to Trump's 167,000. Although Harris achieved a 15-point victory margin in Cobb, surpassing Joe Biden's 14-point margin in 2020, the results remain unofficial until certified by the Cobb Board of Elections on November 12. Cobb County, historically a Republican stronghold, has shifted blue in recent presidential elections due to demographic changes and population growth. This trend reflects Trump's challenges with college-educated suburban voters. Additionally, Cobb Chairwoman Lisa Cupid was reelected with a 10-point lead over Republican Kay Morgan, highlighting the county's evolving political landscape.
