Mental Health Month: Adapting After Trauma

  • Summary

  • As today is the one-year anniversary of George Floyd's murder, Coach Colette speaks in this episode on the topic of trauma. Research shows that after the killing of George Floyd, rates of anxiety and depression for Black and Asian Americans increased between 34 and 41 percentage points. How do you process and heal from trauma? Clearly, one doesn't need to be personally connected to the victims of violence to feel its damaging effects. Coach Colette discusses the importance of acknowledging what has happened instead of suppressing it and being honest with yourself. She also advises you to not compare your experiences and healing journey with others.

Additionally, it is key to take care of both your mind and body— whether that is through movement, breathwork, EFT tapping, focusing on your sleep hygiene, or meditation. Have you found a support network that encourages you in your healing process? Be sure to keep in mind that asking for help is a sign of strength. You deserve grace and patience during a difficult healing process.

Coach Colette appreciates you tuning in to the May Mental Health Month series. We hope you've learned to prioritize the steps it takes to preserve your mental health and foster resilience.
