    Dayvin Hallmon believes that music can both create and heal communities.

    This is what he hopes to do through the Black Diaspora Symphony Orchestra. And he’s searching for musicians who feel the same.

    The Black Diaspora Symphony Orchestra, based in Milwaukee, is an extension of the Black String Triage Ensemble, a string orchestra of Black and Latinx musicians who play at the scene of shootings, car accidents and drug overdoses. It also plays peace-keeping concerts during riots.

    Their mission is to raise equity and increase participation in environmental quality and conservation efforts by empowering the Latino community and minorities to take action against environmental hazards affecting the community and reduce our carbon footprint. They pursue an equitable and sustainable environment by eliminating language and social barriers while advocating for the inclusion of our community in the transition to the clean energy economy and climate change adaptation.

    (Last month public tv goers were treated to Leslie Odom, Jr. starring in Ossie Davis’ “Purlie Victorious,” on PBS. The Broadway production was directed by Kenny Leon. In 2021, his True Colors Theater initiated a national monologue competition for students that was held at the Apollo Theater in New York. A student representing The Milwaukee Rep won second place.) This year, Raichel West, a senior at Marshall High School brought home the gold! She won first prize in the national contest. Here is her monologue, “One Second” by Rachel Lynette.

    Yesica Coria is a Mexican folk artist whose works with corn leaves amaze us and transport us to the origins of a culture whose main source of subsistence was corn. An introspective on the use of this recyclable material to create crafts that before our eyes become works of art.
