  • Fireworks: From the Tudors to Guy Fawkes
    Nov 4 2024

A pyrotechnic dragon roared flames into the river Thames during the coronation week of Elizabeth of York in 1487. These explosive displays were employed as a sign of might and majesty throughout the reign of Henry VIII, and Elizabeth I was the first English monarch to establish their own fire master. By the time of the Gunpowder Plot, fireworks were used not only to celebrate, but to commemorate and incite.

Professor Suzannah Lipscomb talks to John Withington about the remarkable development of pyrotechnics throughout the Tudor and Stuart eras.

  • The Brutal Basque Witch Hunt
    Oct 31 2024

In 1609, some 80 people were executed for witchcraft in France's Basque region. It inspired a final push to eradicate witches by the Spanish Inquisition across the border. One of the judges, Pierre de Lancre, published a sensationalist book which has been the source of every subsequent account. But newly discovered evidence paints a very different picture.

Professor Suzannah Lipscomb finds out more from Dr. Jan Machielsen whose book The Basque Witch Hunt: A Secret History shows that almost everything historians thought they knew about this brutal episode is inaccurate.

Informative and so intriguing!

Great podcast. I particularly enjoyed the encouragement listeners receive of viewing these 'cases' in human ways.

Fantastic, thoroughly recommend

I've been listening to NJTT for a year or two now, and I'm a massive fan. The format is usually for a historian to come and talk about an area of their work with Susannah, who is an engaging host. The topics are usually interesting, but this is a fairly serious history podcast, which means long episodes on occasionally obscure topics. If you're here for that (and I am), then you will love it. But generally, it is not pop history. It is part of the History Hit stable and I recommend you check out their other pods on different history periods.

Makes me feel clever & informed

This is an amazing podcast! Each topic is discussed with an expert who explains it in a way that I can understand without feeling patronised. It shines a light on some extraordinary ideas that I hadn't even thought about: Katherine Parr is now so much more than the wife that 'survived'. In fact, the reclaiming of women at the time is fascinating. Witchcraft is a theme that weaves itself through the series, which itself shows how Europe viewed women at different points. I love the format and actually make a point of being focused on what is being said.
