• PBC: 081 - Leadership- building and sustaining a Vision
    Aug 30 2024
If you are working on something exciting that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed. The vision pulls you. - Steve Jobs The term “vision” is thrown around a lot in the context of organisations and leadership. What is meant by this umbrella term? How important is it? How can we create a compelling and effective vision? How can this vision be sustained in the inevitable difficult times that will come to all of us? Mike and Melon are continuing their exploration of leadership- as it occurs in military aviation and special forces, as well as in families, sporting teams and community groups. This week they define vision- the overarching north star or reason for the organisation’s existence. It shouldn’t just shape strategies, but also the values and principles of the team that guide the way there. How can we build a vision that motivates and draws us forward effectively? How can we get buy in from the people in the team? Your team contend that there has to be an open forum, where a consensus can be formed together, and that achievable goals can be set. The difficult task of sustaining the vision when the chips are down is also covered. The example of Churchill during WW2 is offered- constant communication and reinforcement that serves to maintain the long term effort through the short term hardship. Join the conversation and let us know your experiences. How have you seen this done well? What insights can you offer? Where could we take this conversation next? • PBC: Ep 80 - Seasons of Leadership
    Aug 15 2024
It’s been said that in life, we go through seasons. Seasons of growth, relationships, wealth, development, etc. What about leadership? Are there periods of our lives where leadership evolves? When do roles and responsibilities change? What and when are they? How will we know? In this week’s episode, Mike and Melon comb through the seasons of leadership. Using personal experiences, they equate the seasons to those of the world: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. They break down each, describe their characteristics, and how they assimilate to your position, discuss the “flags” that happen for you to realize the change is taking place, and then the importance of accepting the evolving change that is required for growth and not be so committed to never letting go of that season. Although everyone’s timeline is different and unique, it is healthy to have a good reference to utilize when trying to identify your “purpose” as a leader as you move throughout your career and family. Have you experienced this? Have you ever wondered “Am I supposed to keep doing this or is there something else I should be doing?” Does this example resonate or help you? Let us know! **We will be sharing a seasonal graph to cover the points made in this episode** Goals for 2024: -100 Ratings on Apple Podcasts -50 Written reviews on Apple Podcasts -500 followers on FB, IG & YouTube #PBC #PushingBackChaos #Podcast #HMG #HeroesMediaGrp #Veterans #goals #Transition #Military#Hobbies#Operationonceinalifetime #Adversity #StayPositive #Positivity #Struggle #Youcandothis #Priorities #leadership #Evolving Learn more about your ad choices. • PBC: 079 - Unity in divisive times
    Jul 18 2024
Mike has deployed and Melon is doing his own training ahead of joining the team instructing Australian military pilots- so life has been very busy for your hosts. Both men have been practicing what they preach around focusing on basics and the individual pursuit of professional mastery as an essential precursor to then generate professional impacts in their work teams. A listener question is asked about dealing with disappointments. The discussion covers how we can find lessons and move forward after facing hard times individually. The conversations moves to the shocking recent political violence- the attempted assassination of former President Trump. This is a hugely divided time, and the enemies of western liberal democracies will be cheering on and encouraging that division wherever they can. Your hosts address concrete and actionable ways to foster unity as an antidote to this time of division and rift. With the right thinking, we can find our strength together and move forward. • PBC: 078 - Feeding your Spirit
    Jun 5 2024
The spirit leads the heart, not the heart leading the spirit. This is a common battle for us all. A battle between mind, body and spirit. It can cause unhealthy thoughts, joy, heartbreak, gratefulness, or even physical expressions, such as fighting or hugging. In this weeks episode, Mike and Melon open up with a in-depth review of their own lives since the last episode. From moving across the world to recovering from physical injury, to developing a plan of action for the next chapter in life. They discuss what they feed their spirit, the emotions they feel consistently, and the actions that result on their path to achieving their goals. What matters most is what we feed our spirit throughout our trials and developments. The spirit leads the heart: -> The heart feels the emotion: -> The emotions lead to action/will: The question is, “What are you feeding your spirit?” It may be why you feel the way you do, or define the actions you are taking. What do you think about this battle? How has it hurt you at times? How has it helped you succeed at times? • PBC: 077 - Actionable pathways for Change
    May 2 2024
“If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.” - Lao Tzu “Your life does not get better by chance. It gets better by change.” - Jim Rohn Change often has a bad reputation. We fear the unknown, and change carries some aspect of the unknown. But if we don’t change, we cannot adapt ourselves to a changing world- we will remain static and stuck. Both your hosts are in the midst of major life upheavals and changes. Join them as they discuss strategies to both improve the motivation to act when change is necessary, and frameworks that they have used in both military and personal settings. They both have extensive experience with implementing successful change processes, and with teaching them to pilots and Special Forces operators. A true test of an effective process is one that can be used with professional military and aviation colleagues, and work just as effectively with your family. You will hear examples of how to build motivation to take the first step, and they will cover COL John Boyd’s OODA Loop, and the alternate CSIM models. • PBC, 075 - Gratitude & Integrity: From Failure to success
    Apr 15 2024
Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. - Melody Beattie Life throws up challenges for all of us. The challenges ARE life. There is no escaping them. How can we work through these and manifest our best selves to create the life we want to live? Mike and Melon are certainly no strangers to life’s big challenges- special forces training, operational deployments, finding love, parenting special needs family members, moving a family around the world… These and many more challenges are part of their lives. In these hardest times, both Mike and Melon have found their way through to being their best selves when they have maintained a state of gratitude. Focusing on the blessings in our lives shifts something for all of us- it has us find the creativity and strength that we need to find solutions. Building integrity- treating your word as your bond- has been the only way to have a foundation to stand on when moving forward in the world. An element of this is restoring integrity when the inevitable breakdowns occur- making things right with the people affected. When we face the big challenges- the times when we are suffering- but we are able to maintain both gratitude and integrity, we access our highest states of capabilities. This will have us move from failure to success when we need it most. • PBC, Ep: 074 - Transitioning from Life Experience- LTCOL Jimmy Carr (Part 2)
    Mar 14 2024
After an eye opening and informative part 1, the team welcomes back our special guest, British Army LT Col (Ret.) Jimmy Carr. After an exceptional 22 year military career, as everything else, it was time to move on. Time to transition. Time to change. In this episode, Jimmy, Melon, and Mike discuss the challenges that all veterans will face as they transition back to the private civilian sector. From misperceptions and rumors while still on active duty, to the harsh realities of job hunting & the loss of community and purpose. Its not always what we plan on but it is what we receive. One thing that does separate us veterans from civilians is our community & the willingness to help each other in our times of need. This is one of those examples. We should always be able to lean on & rely on each other as we did in the field, in the fleet, or in the skies above to achieve our life objectives. As the great Winston Churchill said: “Don’t ever give in and don’t ever give up!” Do you know or are you a transitioning veteran? What challenges are there from you/their perspective? How was it handled? What tips would you like to offer?
