  • In 1934, Elizabeth “Buts” Wyland is a young girl living in Alabama with her abusive aunt and uncle. Her only companion is Missus Bestfriend, who lives in a coffee can. Everything changes when she enlists the help of two hobos: a self-ordained wandering monk and a kid-hating gadabout to escape to find her parents in California. Meanwhile, in 2008, an elderly “Buts” is preparing to leave the home her husband built and move into assisted living.
