  • 108: Victoria Beckham - 21 Years of 'This Groove', 'Let Your Head Go' & "The Réal Beckhams" Tracks [Solo Spice Girls: Revisited]
    Dec 29 2024
"Hi, it's us. You won't believe what we're doing." Pop fans, for our final episode of 2024 we absolutely couldn't miss celebrating 21 years of Victoria Beckham's final solo single (to date).

Join Joel and David as they revisit one of their favourite solo Spice Girls eras: Victoria Beckham's double A-side single 'This Groove' / 'Let Your Head Go'. Two different vibes, two stunning music videos and live performance meauxments that dominated telly throughout December 2003 and January 2004.

Posh went all out with the electro-pop dance banger 'Let Your Head Go' and the silky, R&B siren's bop 'This Groove', giving fans a taste of two potential bodies of work from her new record deal with Telstar Records.

We revisit the lore of this era all the way through to the R&B-flavoured tracks exec produced by hip-hop mogul Damon Dash of Roc-A-Fella Records that were included on "The Réal Beckhams" DVD. Most infamously, 'Resentment', which was later covered by Beyoncé.

What solo Spice Girls project should we revisit next? Let us know in the comments!

  • 106: "The Girls Aloud Party" - ITV Christmas Special "Out of Control" Era
    Dec 10 2024
We are kicking off the year-end party season with a recap of Girls Aloud's brilliant 2008 ITV special, "The Girls Aloud Party". With comedy sketches - featuring appearances by Cilla Black, Paul O'Grady and more - as well as exclusive performances of songs from their "Out of Control" album; this was an imperial Girls Aloud era. There was truly something for everyone here - from performances of their well-worn hits like 'Something Kinda Ooooh' to 'Love Machine' through to more 'current' material like 'The Promise' and 'The Loving Kind', and duets with The Kaiser Chiefs and the very dishy (or so David thinks) James Morrison. Hopefully this episode will give you a chuckle and keep you company during this festive season. If you're doing your Christmas wrapping or going on a trip listening to this, let us know where we're going!

  • 105: Discovering: Ellie Campbell & Tata Young
    Nov 27 2024
From Huddersfield to Bangkok, pop fans - are you ready for an adventure? Join Joel and David as they kick start a new ‘Discovering’ series where they each pick a hidden gem of an artist from the 2000s and select 5 songs from their catalogue for a taste test!

Signed to Jive Records and launched in 1999, British pop starlet Ellie Campbell looked and sounded like a ready-made pop star here for the GMTV and Smash Hits audience!

Despite having no formal singing or dance training, Ellie’s warm soulful tone and star quality was undeniable.

The Yorkshire songstress worked with same hitmakers behind Steps (Pete Waterman, Mark Topham, Karl Twigg), launched a handful of singles - including the UK Top 30 smash ‘So Many Ways’ - and even found herself performing at the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras! Though she wasn’t in the pop game for long, Ellie’s bops are forever - and her self-titled album “Ellie” is a real gem!

Before LISA from BLACKPINK, in the 2000s, the world had Thai pop princess Tata Young. Her crossover success in Japan, India, China and across Southeast Asia was pretty much unheard of. Thanks in huge part to her fun signature banger and your new favourite bratty anthem: ‘Sexy, Naughty, Bitchy’ (co-written by legendary pop songwriter Savan Kotecha, who has worked with Ariana Grande, Britney, One Direction, and Dannii Minogue).

Tata’s catalogue of English tunes is top-tier, as she brings her Main Pop Girl Energy to songs that would be released in the West by Ashley Tisdale, The Cheetah Girls, Play and more. The writing credits on her three English albums read like a ‘who’s who’ of RBAY! royalty - Jamelia, Leona Lewis, Natasha Bedingfield, Samantha Jade etc.

If you’re liking this ‘Discovering’ concept - let Joel and David know in the comments who you’d like us to cover next!

  • 104: The Veronicas - "Hook Me Up"
    Nov 18 2024
Get the eyeliner out, grab your guitars and throw on a pair of roughed-up Converse because we are getting dead pop-punky (but also dancefloor ready) for this episode! Joel and a very back-combed hair David are throwing back to The Veronicas' killer double-platinum-selling album, "Hook Me Up", first launched in 2007. This fun, heady, emotional and edgy body of work summed up the sound of our youth in the late 2000s, mixing pop, rock and electro with incredible, relatable lyrics. It spawned The Veronicas' best-known smash hit 'Untouched', gave them their first No.1 single, and gave us irresistible floorfillers like 'Take Me On The Floor' and 'Popular'. Whether you're rocking out to '4ever' or aching with long-distance love to the Kesha-penned 'This Love', this album has it all. Over a period of two years, this era took the talented Aussie twins to new heights across the globe, from touring the States to playing outside the iconic Hollyoaks pub, Dog In The Pond, and even co-presenting duties with Miley Cyrus, Ashley Tisdale and Zac Efron. • 103: Spice Girls - "Spice"
    Nov 1 2024
Here we go! Here we go! This year marks 30 years since the Spice Girls were formed and as a podcast literally named after a Spice Girls album track, we simply could not let this milestone slip away without some kind of celebration!

Joel and David are breaking tradition and going all the way back to 1996 to revisit the legendary debut album "Spice". Geri, Mel B, Emma, Melanie C and Victoria completely changed the pop landscape when they crashed into the charts with 'Wannabe' that summer - quickly becoming one of the most recognisable songs in the world! This multi-million-selling album was a global success, spawning further chart-topping hits like 'Say You'll Be There', '2 Become 1', 'Mama' and 'Who Do You Think You Are?'.

We track their trajectory from a couple of 'raw Spices' to global pop stars in this short span of one album. Join us as we reminisce on all the singles, the music videos, photo shoots, album tracks, b-sides, 'lost tracks' (Justice for 'Do You Think About Me?') and unforgettable live performances of this whirlwind 12 months!

There's obviously so much more we could cover with this era and anything to do with the Spice Girls... so if that's what you want, what you really really want... let us know in the comments!
