Rotten Mango

By: Stephanie Soo & Ramble
  • Summary

  • Rotten but still a little sweet! Rotten Mango is a true crime + all things spooky podcast. We love doing deep dives into the darkest crimes and we tend to not leave out any details - which can get a little rotten at times. If you want deep dives in the psychology of killers, no holding back storytelling of crimes, and stories of lesser known criminals from around the world this is the place for you. Welcome to Rotten Mango but don’t worry it all comes with a seasoning of comedy/sweetness.

  • #373: Burning Sun’s K-Pop Idols Released From Prison - Now Trying To Make Comeback & Open New Club
    Jul 7 2024
The police had a strange situation on their hands. A thief had broken into a multi-million dollar home - to steal a safe. The safe had 3 items in it. Jewelry. Investment documents. And the home owner’s old phones. The police were able to quickly determine that the thief did not want the jewelry or the investment documents in the safe. Which means - the thief is going after the home owner’s old phones. Why would a thief want some old phones? Was there something on there that they didn’t want anyone else to see? But most puzzling is - who would do this to Goo Hara? The home belonged to a k-pop idol who had just died just 49 days ago. What did they want from her safe? And how does this connect to the Burning Sun case? • #372: K-pop Idol Goo Hara Helped Expose the BURNING SUN Sex Scandal In Her Final Days
    Jul 3 2024
A young man calls the police around 3:30 am to report that he had just been physically assaulted by his ex-girlfriend. Officers are dispatched and the caller greets them with a few red scratches on his face. He had gone over to his ex-girlfriend’s apartment to break up with her—but that’s when she went crazy; scratching his face and twisting his arm. The officers ask the man for her name. Goo Hara. A K-pop idol from the girl group KARA. When the police begin investigating, the man’s story begins to fall apart. If what he’s saying is true, why is there CCTV footage of Goo Hara on her knees—seemingly begging the young man? Why did he email Dispatch, a Korean tabloid, twice during this so-called ‘one sided assault?’ And what does all of this have to do with Burning Sun? A couple of months pass, and Goo Hara helps reporters blow the lid off the Burning Sun case. Not even a year later, she is found dead. This is part two of Burning Sun. • #371: 9 University Students Hijack A Japanese Plane to North Korea
    Jun 30 2024
There’s this fascinating little town called ‘Little Japan.’ It’s a gated community with cookie-cutter houses, though they boast beautiful chandeliers and heated floors, and all of them have a matching set of priceless portraits hanging on their walls. The residents are nine Japanese families, hence the name, and they have their own private chefs, maids, even chauffeurs in black Mercedes. A small movie theater, a massive sauna house, and a grocery store where they never have to pay. The catch? If they ever want to leave the community ‘gates,’ they must ask for permission from the Supreme Leader… The town itself is not even an hour outside of North Korea’s capital. The families themselves are neither Japanese nor North Korean royalty, nor are they diplomats or even government officials either. They’re a gang of hijackers. Hijackers who stole a plane and flew it into North Korea—and now the distinguished guests of the Kim regime were to become his secret weapon. Just made a discovery about this case, it's crazy!

I've just recently started binge-listening to Rotten Mango for the first time and the timing of me finding this episode specifically being March 2023, is simply insane. I'm Portuguese and grew up surrounded by Brazilian people, media and culture so I identify things regarding Brazil to be close to me also, but I had never heard of this case before. So I just looked him up out of curiosity to see if I could find his online presence as mentioned in this episode, only to find out that he was literally MURDERED earlier THIS MONTH!!! 😱 It was all over Brazilian news, I came across loads of articles from the biggest Brazilian TV stations and news outlets talking about it. What are the odds that he would not only die, but be murdered literally just 10 days prior to me listening to this episode... 🤯😵

Absolutely obsessed!

Every Wednesday and Sunday I get excited for this podcast to drop! Stephanie is an amazing story teller. She is so engaging and the little additional comments from her fiancé make this podcast so charming and enjoyable, even when the content is sometimes so dark. I’m a big fan of her Baking a Mystery series as well, where she reviews and retells films and stories. Couldn’t recommend her content more!!

From Yt to Audible~

I came from Youtube to listening to your podcast on audible. I listen to your podcast whenever I do chores or while I was at my workplace. Every case is eye opening and bizarre. It reminded me of both good and bad stuff that I should be aware of. Thank you for the amazing content and thank you for sharing it with us :)

Can't stop listening!

Rotten Mango Stephanie is an awesome storyteller! I've been listening non-stop for the last week, after finding her on YouTube. She's the kind of narrator who helps me to visualise what's going on in the story.
