  • San Antonio Stories - Floores Country Store - Salem Media Group
    Feb 9 2019

Floore’s Country Store on Old Bandera Road didn’t stay a store very long after the legendary dance hall and cafe opened in 1942.  Another San Antonio Story after this.

Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, and Elvis Presley all played Floores Country Store back in the day as it’s also known as the musical birthplace of Willie Nelson.  John T. Floore had experience in booking musical greats from his previous job as the manager of the Majestic Theatre. John T. Floore passed in 1975...and the dance Floore is still open.  I’m Sonny Melendrez.

  • San Antonio Stories - MLK Drive - Salem Media Group
    Feb 9 2019

On the East Side of San Antonio several streets running east to west are named after northern states...like Wyoming, Iowa, Dakota and Montana but one changed...another San Antonio Story after this.

San Antonio proves it year after year. It’s the largest march in the United States with over 300,000 people faithfully progressing in peace on MLK Day down a street formerly known as Nebraska that was honorably renamed in 1975 to Martin Luther King Drive.   I’m Sonny Melendrez.

    Oct 17 2018
San Antonio Stories as heard on Freedom 1160 and 930AM The Answer - Voiced by Sonny Melendrez

Two Texas brothers made their fortune in cotton and cars, but their love for ranching birthed The Bexar County Coliseum.  Another San Antonio Story after this.

The Bexar County Coliseum opened its doors in 1949 for the Greatest Show on Earth  but was built for The Stock Show and Rodeo. Joseph Freeman insisted it not be named after him, but the board prevailed in 1958.  The final name change came in 1985, a year after Harold’s death. Millions of memories still being made at the Joe and Harry Freeman Coliseum.  I’m Sonny Melendrez.

The Stinson Municipal is the second oldest airport in America...and it’s not named after one person, but one man and two women...the Stinson siblings.  Another San Antonio Story after this.

In 1915 The Stinson family rented 500 acres from the City of San Antonio for just $5 an acre and launched the Stinson School of Flying.  The Stinson Siblings were Marjorie, Eddie, and Katherine who was the first woman in the world to perform the loop the loop maneuver.
