Harry Rob Bruner’s spiritual journey is a significant aspect of his life and creative work. In his solo show, Nephew of the Universe, Bruner delves into his experiences growing up within a renowned spiritual organization that his family helped establish. His aunt played a pivotal role in bringing the guru Sri Chinmoy to America, leading to the formation of a worldwide spiritual movement. Bruner’s performance offers a heartfelt and, at times, whimsical narrative of his twenty years in this Queens, New York-based meditation group. He candidly shares the challenges he faced, including the struggle with celibacy”a condition of discipleship”and his internal conflict between spiritual commitments and personal desires, such as his ambition to become a rock star. The show combines music, visuals, and storytelling to provide insight into his unique upbringing and the complexities of balancing spiritual life with personal aspirations.

“Music, how and why it can pull you out of a normal day to day consciousness into something more profound and timeless.”

Phil recently moved from Seattle, a town where he'd lived since 1990 (which was the dawn of Seattle-born grunge!), and a town he swore he'd never leave, to the much smaller Port Townsend on the Olympic Peninsula, about 2 1/2 hours away. Turns out Port Townsend's music scene, while smaller and slightly less prestigious than Seattle's, is vibrant and active and much more accessible. Currently he's playing cello with the local orchestra, and also playing fusion with local musicians. As well as his ongoing work on guitar supporting a young singer in Mexico City. He is also a self-proclaimed cello-sticker mogul.
He can be heard on The Mahavishnu Orchestra’s albums Apocalypse and Visions of the Emerald Beyond
