• Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991) with Jayce
    Aug 13 2024

Hop into your time machine and pilot your Mecha, because Godzilla expert Jayce joins us for King Ghidorah's entrance into the Heisei era! This fantastical sci-fi romp is a response to America's blockbusters like Back to the Future and a celebration of Showa era monster fights, but it's also surprisingly wrapped up in Japanese/American economic relations (yes, we're talking about the economy again.) We also get into the complicated time travel that explores Godzilla's origins, Kawakita's special effects, the loveable and Terminator-esque M-11 Android, and of course, the time Godzilla cried.

  • Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965)
    Jul 13 2024

Godzilla goes to spaaaace! In a movie that's way more alien invasion space opera than kaiju, the hilariously-dressed Xiliens from Planet X introduce us to Monster Zero (aka Ghidorah) and get Earth wrapped in a convoluted plot involving trapping sleepy Godzilla and Rodan in bubbles. We talk the first American-Japanese co-production for Toho -- which includes a major role for Rebel Without a Cause's Nick Adams and a complex English/Japanese language shoot -- along with space lady clones, a backslide in character dynamics, and of course, Godzilla's famous little dance and its surprisingly important ramifications.

  • Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964)
    Jun 27 2024

It's Hot Ghidorah Summer, and the planet-destroying space dragon king has made his entrance! This is the movie where everything changes: it's cosmic, it's an Avengers-style team-up among Godzilla, Mothra, and Rodan, and perhaps most importantly, it's the moment Godzilla becomes a hero to cheer for. We talk about this film's shift in philosophy and Ishirō Honda's complicated feelings, along with a Biollante-esque plot that includes psychic prophecies, a Venusian spirit possessing a princess, assassins, and Hiroshi Koizumi being the hottest man to ever rock a yellow raincoat and bucket hat.

  • Rodan (1956)
    Jun 13 2024

It's a bird, it's a plane... it's Rodan, the giant flying monster! But would you believe it's also a horror movie delving into the plight of the underclass through the lens of coal miners, a sci-fi movie with killer bugs, and that it has an absolutely unpredictable final act twist? We talk yet another fascinating enty from Ishirō Honda -- including what makes it so close to the original Godzilla, the advancements in Tsubaraya's miniatures, the gorgeous cinematography, gay dinosaurs, and more! Plus, we answer some listener mail.

  • Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000)
    May 13 2024

What if the Oxygen Destroyer never stopped the original Godzilla? Turns out, it leads to a space gun that shoots black holes and a prehistoric dragonfly kaiju! Masaaki Tezuka's Aliens-inspired action romp features a mishmash of gory horror, comic book science fiction, and a wild fight...but is there any depth? We talk creepy bugs, digital effects, riding on Godzilla's back, and yes, that body slam.

  • Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989) with Gavin Mevius
    Apr 13 2024

Spring flowers are in bloom, and so is our girl Biollante! Gavin from The Mixed Reviews joins us for Kazuki Ōmori's masterful Heisei film featuring one of the wildest and most complex monster designs of all time. And the only chimera weirder than a Godzilla/rose/human hybrid is the movie itself -- a combo of 80s genetic horror, James Bond, teen psychics, and hover tanks that comes from a story by a dentist and features music by the Dragon Quest composer. We talk about this movie's strange conception, torch-passing to a new generation, genetic engineering fears, mindblowing special effects, and more!
