  • Episode 8 - Sadhbh O'Sullivan and Sharon Murphy (Embrace Music Ireland)
    Nov 20 2023

Sharon Murphy and Sadhbh O’Sullivan (aka Sive) are singer-songwriters, community musicians and music and wellness practitioners. Not only that, but they are truly lovely, fascinating people with a beautiful perspective on creating music and working with non-musicians to create music as a form of wellness practice.

We discuss how they got in to playing and creating music, the struggles but also the beauty and sense of achievement attached to working with community groups, and also the challenges faced with the COVID years and how easy it is for the work of music for wellbeing to lead you to forget your own wellbeing. We also discuss inspiration and the light and playful attitude that one needs to take to a creative undertaking.

Their community project Embrace Music Ireland runs events, workshops and is currently engaged in a residency with weekly outreaches in the Acre Project, Cellbridge, Co.Kildare.

  • Episode 7 - Lyndsey Connolly
    Oct 2 2023

Lyndsey Connolly, MA is a professional Music Therapist and soon to be Vocal Psychotherapise. Her particular viewpoint on music is fascinating as someone who had always loved music and performance, but whose passions for connecting with others through music and for helping others have combined beautifully and led her to being a trained practicing Music Therapist. This area is a fascinating and necessary collision of health and wellbeing, the science and psychology of healing and the primacy of music for humans.

  • Episode 6 - Naoise MacConghail
    Sep 18 2023

Naoise MacConghail is a close friend of mine, an excellent musician and thinker, a composer, a Gaeilgeoir and as you'll hear over the course of this episode - completely in love with Music. This was a hard episode to edit as we spoke for over 2 hours while rolling and I left a lot on the cutting room floor that I loved but was perhaps not totally relevant to the mission statement of this podcast.
Listen in to hear about Naoise's encompassing love for music, practicing, performing, the communicative possibilities of music and how he came to fall in love with it and dedicate his life to it.

  • Episode 5 - Orlando Molina
    Sep 4 2023

Orlando Molina, a Dublin-based, Venezuelan composer, guitarist, instrumentalist, music educator, head of his own music school and absolutely lovely person joined Aaron to chat this week. Their talk covered everything from the invisible connections between people, how music is like an incomprehensible higher power, the responsibility to write the truth, Orlando’s background and having to move country, the concept of personal responsibility and finding peace with others interpreting your art as their own, embracing uncertainty, getting in to the zone, what is special about that place, striving to find it again, and generally just a chat about the incalculable importance of forming connections as a source of the most basic humanity we all crave and music’s role in this worldwide.

  • Episode 4 - Matthew Jacobson
    Aug 21 2023

In this Episode, Aaron sat down with Dr Matthew Jacobson - the Jazz Doctor. Matthew Jacobson is an Irish drummer, composer, bandleader, educator and producer who teaches full time DCU's BA in Jazz and Contemporary Music Education program. Matthew is one of Ireland's leading lights on the jazz and improvised music scene and an absolutely lovely person on top of all that. It's clear when talking to Matt that there are a hundred considered ideas for every one that he says out loud. Listen in on their discussion here of the therapeutic process of finding out how your playing fits in to a larger group, the variety of ways that changing the context of the music changes the music itself and the utilisation of new tools in traditional and modern contexts to bring out new avenues of creativity.

Matthew's thoughts are an absolutely fascinating piece of inspiration for any musician.
