  • MF DOOM and Ecstasy (of the group Whodini) remembered with Jay and Captain Keith
    Jul 12 2024
Jay and Captain Keith have a discussion about two great MC's who has both made great contributions to hip-hop. R.I.P to MF Doom and the Ecstasy from the Golden age Brooklyn based hip hop group Whodini! MF Doom/Daniel Dumile (July 13, 1971 – October 31, 2020), best known by his stage name MF Doom or simply Doom (both stylized in all caps), was a British-American rapper and record producer. Noted for his intricate wordplay, signature metal mask, and "supervillain" stage persona, Dumile became a major figure of underground hip hop in the 2000s. After his death, Variety described him as one of the scene's "most celebrated, unpredictable and enigmatic figures". KMD (Kausing Much Damage, or A positive Kause in a Much Damaged society) was an American hip hop trio active in the early 1990s. The core of the group was composed of brothers Daniel "Zev Love X" and Dingilizwe "DJ Subroc" Dumile. The group is best known for launching the career of Zev Love X, who later became MF Doom. The group's original third member, Rodan, left before the group signed with Elektra Records; he was replaced with Onyx the Birthstone Kid. The group disbanded in 1993 after the sudden death of DJ Subroc and the subsequent decision by Elektra to drop the group from their label. KMD released two studio albums, Mr. Hood (1991) and Black Bastards, with the latter originally recorded in 1993 but not officially released until 2001 due to its cancellation by Elektra. Whodini is an American hip hop group that was formed in 1982. The Brooklyn, New York-based trio consisted of vocalist and main lyricist Jalil Hutchins; co-vocalist John Fletcher, a.k.a. Ecstasy (who wore a Zorro-style hat as his trademark); and turntable artist DJ Drew Carter, a.k.a. Grandmaster Dee. Coming out of the fertile New York rap scene of the early '80s, Whodini was one of the first rap groups to add R&B twist to their music, thus laying the foundation for a new genre - new jack swing. The group made its name with good-humored songs such as "Magic's Wand" (the first rap song accompanied by a video), "The Haunted House of Rock", "Friends", "Five Minutes of Funk" and "Freaks Come Out at Night". Live performances of the group were the first rap concerts with the participation of breakdance dancers from the group UTFO. Russell Simmons was the manager of the group in the '80s.
