  • Jon Norfolk - The Leverage You Can Create From An Under-Performance Is Really Strong
    Jun 8 2022
Jon Norfolk is head of coaching at one of Great Britain’s most successful Olympic programmes, British Cycling. Jon is another of our guests that has experienced competing and coaching in different cultures and environments. Having worked previously with the Australian Track Cycling Team and been head coach of the hugely successful GB Paralympic cycling programme, he was also both an International cyclist in his own right and also cycled as a tandem partner including setting a world record in the kilo at the 2008 Paralympic World Cup. We chatted about coaching the athlete In front of you and not the programme, individualisation and performance planning, the importance of having plenty of tools available to you as a coach as well as how he measures and monitors performance. He’s really easy to chat to and a very humble guy and I start with asking what excites him.Show Notes: British Cycling - https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/Australian Track Cycling Team - https://www.auscycling.org.au/Jason Queally - https://www.teamgb.com/athlete/jason-queally/69LWPBVXJblHRlPC4Y5b8FChris Hoy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_HoyCraig MacLean - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_MacLeanRio Paralympics - https://www.paralympic.org/rio-2016Marginal Gains - https://jamesclear.com/marginal-gainsMore About Jon Norfolk:Twitter - https://twitter.com/robbieelliott3?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5EauthorLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/robbie-elliott-6971383b/Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robbie_ElliottListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmBen On Social:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

  • Scott Drawer - We Need To Value The Off-load As Well As The Load
    Jun 1 2022
Scott Drawer is the current Director of Sport at Millfield School, one of the UK’s leading independent school’s. Before that he was Head of Research and Innovation at UK Sport and also held positions as Athletic Performance Manager at the Rugby Football Union and worked in the Sky Performance Hub in Cycling. I first met Scott in his role at UK Sport almost 15 years ago as I asked him to help me tap into the amazing work being done across the UK sport innovation and research network to help the England sevens programme I was running at the time . His varied experiences made this a wide-ranging an incredibly interesting conversation covering innovation, technology, leadership, teaching, coaching, learning environments and a whole lot more. • Robbie Elliott Part 2 - Being First Is Not Always The Best
    May 25 2022
This week its part 2 of my chat with former footballer Robbie Elliott. Robbie spent two decades as a professional footballer, playing over 140 times for Newcastle United and over 250 appearances in total. Last week we chatted about his own playing career and some of the iconic managers he worked under including Ossie Ardilles, Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalgleish, Sam Allardyce and Sir Bobby Robson. This week we focus on his career post playing from his role at Newcastle in the sports science department to moving to the US to join the Nike research lab and the other performance work he’s been involved since his retirement. It’s a fascinating and insightful journey.Show Notes: Mark Hulse - https://www.nufcblog.com/2009/06/27/coaches-hulse-and-elliott-leave-newcastle-for-liverpool/Nike Portland Headquarters - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pqsUfK2N1oNike European Headquarters - https://jobs.nike.com/ehqNike’s Innovation Kitchen - https://www.freshnessmag.com/2016/09/20/wired-magazine-nike-innovation-kitchen/England Rugby Sevens - https://www.englandrugby.com/england/sevens-men#indexSeb Coe - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebastian_CoeLeBron James - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LeBron_JamesTiger Woods - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_WoodsLA Sports Teams - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_in_Los_AngelesRed Bull Facility - https://www.si.com/edge/2015/05/08/sweat-mecca-red-bull-high-performance-centerMalcolm Gladwell Books - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Malcolm-Gladwell/e/B000APOE98?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_2&qid=1653303486&sr=8-2The Checklist Manifesto Book by Atul Gawande - https://amzn.to/3G7Jk3m Maradona Documentary - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuErPYsoaR4Living With The Lions Documentary - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Living-Lions-Sir-Ian-McGeechan/dp/B0733RMVQ7One Night In Turin Documentary - https://www.amazon.co.uk/One-Night-Turin-Gary-Oldman/dp/B07N126MYGESPN 30 For 30 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/30_for_30More About Robbie Elliott:Twitter - https://twitter.com/robbieelliott3?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5EauthorLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/robbie-elliott-6971383b/Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robbie_ElliottListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmBen On Social:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

Outstanding

I've just finished Ben's book Sevens Heaven which I devoured in 2 sittings. One of the best sports books I've read. The elements that made it so compelling for me was the storytelling nature of the book. Ben is keen to seek out each player's personal experiences and what brought them to the brink of the squad. I was fascinated to read how much Fiji taught him. He brought his skill set and sorts science, the players brought joy, culture, community and magic.

The podcast takes the ideas and themes identified in the book and develops them with fascinating interviews with some amazing people.
