  • Summary

  • DJ Special K, in the debut episode of 'The Wrestling Historian' podcast, discusses the formative years of Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) and the pivotal role Shane Douglas played in its creation. We go back in time to August 1994 when wrestling was predominantly dominated by WWF and WCW, and Douglas, a rising star, clinched the prestigious NWA World Heavyweight Championship. However, instead of basking in his victory, Douglas chose to redefine wrestling, denounced the NWA title, and birthed ECW. This marked the advent of a new style of wrestling – hardcore wrestling, pushing the boundaries of traditional wrestling. Although the ECW ceased operations in 2001, its legacy continues to influence the industry, all thanks to Douglas, who ignited a revolution that night in Philadelphia.
