    Sep 27 2022

Today way go back into the vault, September 27, 2016 to be exact. On this date we dropped a interview we did with Charles Stokes from Big Deer Hunters. Charles made his own soaps, cover scents and deer lures from his basement.

It was one of our first interviews. AB3 was very green and the production quality wasn't the best. Still the creativity and determination of Charles Stokes is a wonderful story that needed to be told.

    Aug 16 2022

    Episode 124

    Divya Anantharaman: Gotham Taxidermy

AB3 sits down with Divya Anantharaman, founder of Gotham Taxidermy. The Brooklyn-based award-winning taxidermist discusses her journey from the fashion industry into the fascinating world of taxidermy, and the legacy she wants to leave behind as a Woman of Color in her unique space.

    Episode Highlights

    • Divya gives her refreshing opinion on hunting and her experience taking on clients who want her to preserve their animals, from waterfowl to big game.
    • Divya talks about the strangest project she was ever given, as well as the animals she finds most challenging to preserve.
    • They talk about being “ambassadors of our culture” as they journey to other countries.
    • Sonya and Necota talk about their event, The Gathering, which brings together the Black and Brown communities to learn more about and appreciate all things camping and the outdoors.

    3 Key Points

    • If you’re looking to get into taxidermy, find one animal that you’re passionate about and focus on learning all you can about recreating that animal until you’ve mastered it. Then move onto the next—expand your skillset further.
    • A skilled taxidermist like Divya can preserve your pet; but, it’s important to set the right expectations. They can do a lot, but they will never be able to replace the relationship you had with your animal.
    • Now that Divya has experienced a lot of personal success in what she does, her next mission is one of outreach—to bring more education, accessibility, and diversity into the field of taxidermy.

    Three Powerful Quotes

    • What bigger expression of love and appreciation for an animal than recreating it—turning it into this other form of itself. ~Divya
    • At the root of it, when you go outside, you’re appreciating nature. That nature is a little sparrow or a big deer or an alligator. If you’re appreciating it, that’s really what the outdoors is all about. ~Divya
    • With taxidermy, we’re always surrounded by death; so, I’m always thinking about what I’m going to leave behind. ~Divya

    Episode 123

Sonya & Necota Staples: Staples InTents

AB3 sits down with Sonya and Necota Staples, the husband and wife team behind Staples InTents, an Atlanta-based camping, adventure travel and lifestyle blog. The brand was created to encourage the Black and Brown community to experience the life-changing effect of the outdoors. Listen in as the pair share their passion for camping and overlanding, and how they intend to spread that passion to countless others in their community!

    Episode Highlights

    • Sonya and Necota share how bonding together in the outdoors repaired a marriage that was on the brink of divorce.
    • Our guests break down “overlanding” and how to choose a vehicle and amenities that suit your travel goals and lifestyle.
    • They talk about being “ambassadors of our culture” as they journey to other countries.
    • Sonya and Necota talk about their event, The Gathering, which brings together the Black and Brown communities to learn more about and appreciate all things camping and the outdoors.

    3 Key Points

    • If you’re curious about camping for the first time, it helps to ease into it by assessing your comfort level and making that first trip as pleasant as possible—even if that means you’ll be “glamping” your first time around.
    • As a Black-American, whenever you travel to a different country, see yourself as an ambassador not just of your nation, but of your unique culture as well. This mindset makes every trip all the more rewarding.
    • With all that Sonya and Necota do, particularly through their now bi-annual event The Gathering, their ultimate goal is “to meet you wherever you are in your outdoor journey and help elevate it.”

    Three Powerful Quotes

    • Camping allowed us the space that we needed. It allowed us to set the tone for us to go out and change roles, see each other differently, see value in each other differently, and learn to listen to each other. If you’re outside and the goal is to put up a tent, we’ve got no time to argue! ~Sonya
    • The difference between “glamping” and “camping” is “surviving” and “thriving”. ~Necota
    • We are ambassadors of our country and ambassadors of our culture. As we are traveling, we are paradigm-shifting everyone that we interact with. So, there’s some gravitas to overlanding that wasn’t really clear to us before. ~Necota

    Episode 122

    Nikkita Gordon: Cute & Cocky

AB3 sits down with Nikkita Gordon, Founder and CEO of Cute & Cocky, a manufacturer of firearm accessories and apparel based in Albany, Ga. Listen in as she shares how she found massive success as a serial entrepreneur at only 26 years old, why she specifically decided to start a business in the firearm industry, and her exciting ideas for the future.

    Episode Highlights

    • Nikkita tells the gripping story of how a couple of close-calls with a registered sex offender motivated her to get her firearm license.
    • Nikkita shares her goal of licensing out the patents for her company’s holsters, so that they can be incorporated into the clothing of existing brands
    • Nikkita talks about how she and her business was received when she came on the scene as a young, Black female entrepreneur.

    3 Key Points

    • After noticing a lack of concealed carry attire options for women, Nikkita filled the market gap by building a company which offers clothing that is not only functional, but fashionable as well.
    • Nikkita and Cute & Cocky are on fire and ready to scale the brand further than it has ever gone in the past few years, from licensing out the patents for its holsters to existing clothing brands to venturing into global markets.
    • There aren’t currently a lot of Black women involved in shooting sports and the hunting industry. Nikkita hopes that, through her example, more individuals like herself will become aware of and excited about getting involved in these spaces.

    Three Powerful Quotes

    • Who wouldn’t want to own a concealed carry holster company with patents and trademarks already completed for them?
    • I’ve been able to partner with these organizations because they understand what I have to offer as far as bringing an audience of Black women to get more involved in shooting sports and hunting.
    • This is a space where there are very few Black women involved; so, when I walk into a lot of these rooms, there are only a few of us. But it’s not because they don’t want to be there. Sometimes, they’re just not aware and someone has to enliven their interest in these events.

    Episode Highlights

    • AB3 talks about his burnout and the passing of his mother leading to his pausing the podcast 14 months ago

    3 Key Points

    • The Bryant Land Show will continue to evolve with the introduction of a video podcast, amongst other things AB3 has in store for the future. Despite that, he intends to keep the core of the show going—to continue to stick to the roots of hunting, fishing, boating, and other subjects that made the show its own.
    • AB3 believes that telling more stories will open more eyes to the real world of hunting, gun ownership, and the outdoors lifestyle as a whole. He intends to bring a diverse range of guests to do just that.
    • While the podcast will soon venture into topics beyond hunting and fishing, AB3 will always ensure that the show stays true to the brand’s core mission: Bringing diversity to the outdoors.

    Three Powerful Quotes

    • There are a lot of new podcasts out. A lot of people look at that as competition; but, we’re just going to do us here—me and my guests. We’re going to talk about hunting. We’re going to talk about fishing.
    • I want to talk to interesting people. I want them to tell their stories. And in order to do that, we’ve got to expand. We’ve got to grow.
    • Bringing diversity to the outdoors: That is still our mission.
