The Chair Project

  • Summary

  • Welcome to The Chair Project!

We’re setting out to create a living archive of stories about community, identity and tradition - old and new. An old kitchen chair, set in iconic, meaningful and beautiful locations, is our vehicle - a catalyst for honest, inspiring, open conversations. We’re aiming for a fresh episode every month, featuring people from all walks of life with stories big and small.

We’re starting in Cornwall, our home. Anyone is welcome to take a seat in the chair, from those whose families go back generations to those who have recently washed up here and embraced this place.

  • The National Lobster Hatchery
    Jan 25 2024
Our kitchen chair balances precariously among the rocks that scatter Trevaunance Cove.

We're chatting to Chris Weston, from the National Lobster Hatchery, and together a few moments earlier, we had witnessed something quite remarkable - the release of hundreds of two month old lobsters, barely longer than fingernail, back into the wild.

In this episode of the Chair Project, we hear about the National Lobster Hatchery's mission to bolster the stocks of lobster along the coast in Cornwall, to support the fishing industry and our ocean health for years to come.

  • Maker Church Bell Ringers
    Mar 30 2023

From the roof of Maker Church, there is a panoramic view of Cornwall. On a clear day, the Lizard stretches west, and to the east, Plymouth glints across the water as the Tamar meanders into the English Channel. It’s a quiet Tuesday night, but the bird’s evening chorus is about to be joined by a sound that feels almost as ubiquitous to this landscape - the chiming of church bells.

From the chair, we listen to John and Anita, who tell us about their small, eclectic community of those who ring the bells, what it takes to be a bellringer and why this simple activity means so much to them.

If you're keen to find out more about bell ringing at Maker church or even get involved yourself you can find John's contact details on the link HERE
