The Election Explained: Old enough to know better? | Should the voting age be lowered?

  • Summary

  • In the second show of a three-part mini-series on the General Election 2024, Gareth Roberts is joined by Edge Hill University's Senior Lecturer in Politics Paula Keaveney and Associate Tutor in Politics and Social Sciences Ben Williams.

The show focuses on the legal age to vote, which for a General Election in the UK currently stands at 18. The National Union of Students is lobbying for the 16 and 17-year-olds to be given the right to vote and media reports suggest it is something Labour will introduce if they win the election.

So why is the age 18 now? What would happen if the age was lowered? And how do other countries approach this issue?

The panel also answered questions about the election submitted by The University's students and staff.
