Through a case study, we discuss how this self-criticism manifests and why it becomes difficult for some to embrace supportive voices or good opportunities. We also touch on the defense mechanisms that protect a fragile sense of self, leading to behaviors like self-sabotage. Finally, we consider how increasing awareness of these unconscious patterns can facilitate and help individuals integrate the split-off parts of themselves for greater personal growth.

This split world is linked to his split representations of the two most important people in his life, his critical grandmother and supportive mother. The conversation raises questions about why he identifies more with the critical voice and pushes away the supportive voice. Why can he not accept and internalize a more caring and supportive voice?
