This week's show begins with the increased global spending on nuclear weapons, how does US election spending compare to the rest of the world, Zelensky has a peace plan to present to Biden next month and he is using the F16s the US gifted him, and Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have launched separate charges against Israeli military actions in Palestine.

This week's show features stories from Radio Deutsche-Welle, NHK Japan, and Radio Havana Cuba. http://youthspeaksout.net/swr240830.mp3 (29:00) From GERMANY- From the DW Business desk, Kate Ferguson presents the topic of increased spending on nuclear weapons. Last year the world spent $91 billion on nuclear arsenals, a 13% increase from 2022. The US led the race with $51 billion, China second at $12 billion, and Russia third with $8 billion. In the US lobbyists spent over $17 million promoting nuclear weapons to politicians. When the US extended its nuclear umbrella to South Korea, the North had no arsenal but may have up to 50 warheads now. NATO has 4200 warheads, most of them American, and this years US presidential election could change its stability. And speaking of the US election subject, the role of money in this years campaigns is huge. $4 billion was spent in 2020 and that will be surpassed this year. After some statistics are presented, Professor Ray La Raja from the University of Massachusetts discusses how the money is further polarizing the nation. He compares the European model of public campaign financing to the American system. From JAPAN- Japan reported a Chinese military aircraft drifted into Japanese territory for the first time. The US and Indonesia began military drills with 20 other nations participating or observing. Ukrainian president Zelensky said he has a peace plan with Russia to be presented to Biden next month. The next day Zelensky announced that his pilots were now flying US gifted F16s in the war, and that he wants more. Ukrainian drones started a fire at a Russian fuel depot. From CUBA- Californian Congressperson Barbara Lee is speaking out against the US blockades of Cuba. The electrical grid was again attacked in Venezuela, which the government blames on far right terrorists. Amnesty International in London called for a war crimes investigation into a new Israeli bombing of another refugee camp. Human Rights Watch reports that Palestinian health care workers are being rounded up from medical facilities, sent to detention centers in Israel, and then severely mistreated and some tortured.

Do not allow those who have caused this crisis to define the limits of political action. Do not allow those whose magical thinking got us into this mess to tell us what can and cannot be done.” -- George Monbiot

This week's show features stories from NHK Japan, Radio Deutsche-Welle, and Radio Havana Cuba. http://youthspeaksout.net/swr2408023.mp3 (29:00) From JAPAN- 13 years after the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima power plant, the first attempt to remove 880 tons of highly radioactive fuel debris has been suspended. Foreign and defense ministers of Japan and India met to review their joint declaration on security cooperation. From GERMANY- As the ceasefire talks continue, so does the daily bombing in Gaza. An interview with an Egyptian journalist, Karim Al-Gawhary, about the talks. He says that the sticking points are Israel insisting on a continued military presence in Gaza, and continuing the war in the future. Palestine is opposed to these demands. Moves to tax the world's extremely wealthy have taken hold in several countries, like Spain, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark- Their ultra-rich have not moved elsewhere, according to the Tax Justice Network. This week's show begins with in-depth reporting on the German government issuing a warrant for a Ukrainian whom they believe was involved in the 2022 Nord Stream Pipeline explosion, the 20th school bombing in Palestine in a month leaves more than 90 civilians dead and global outrage, in Venezuela right-wing groups spread chaos and murder, and 500 medical workers in Palestine have been killed.

With reports from Germany and Cuba. http://youthspeaksout.net/swr2408016.mp3 (29:00) From GERMANY- In September of 2022, the Nord Stream 2 pipeline was blown up. Intended to deliver an increased supply of natural gas from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea. This was 7 months into the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It created an energy crisis in Europe, global petroleum prices soared, and the US launched a massive delivery system of LNG by ship to Germany. The US blamed the explosions on Russia, others said the US was behind the sabotage, and last year US officials said a pro-Ukrainian group was likely the culprit. Germany has issued an arrest warrant for a Ukrainian with a Polish address. This story is breaking as I produce this show. Last weekend Israeli forces bombed the 20th school in Palestine in the last month- this one killed scores of civilians and has been condemned by governments and organizations across the globe- a spokesperson from the organization Save The Children reports on the deadliest attack on a school since October. A DW correspondent in Israel explains their justification for the precision bombing of displaced Palestinians sheltering in a school. LINK for Seymour Hersh on the Nord Stream explosion SWR 03/03/23- http://youthspeaksout.net/swr230303.mp3 From CUBA- Concerning the election in Venezuela, the Attorney General presented a detailed report on right wing attempts to disrupt the country. A Peruvian court dismissed the case against former president Fujimori for the 1990-2000 forced sterilization of 200,000 poor and indigenous women. The UN Special Rapporteur for Palestine says the latest Israeli military school bombing was further evidence of genocide using US and EU weapons. The US will send an additional $3.5 billion to Israel for US made weapons. The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights monitor found no evidence of a military presence at the latest school massacre in Palestine. The Palestine Ministry of Health says nearly 500 medical workers have been killed in the Gaza Strip, 310 medical workers have been arrested, and 130 ambulances have been destroyed.
