  • Why don't hippos need SPF lotion?
    Mar 3 2025
Why don't hippos need SPF lotion?

It turns out, hippos have a unique way to protect themselves from the sun. They secrete a red-orange fluid that acts as a natural sunscreen and antibiotic. This secretion, often called "blood sweat," isn't actually blood or sweat. It's a special fluid that absorbs ultraviolet light, shielding the hippo's skin from sun damage. Additionally, its acidic nature helps prevent bacterial infections, keeping their skin healthy. But here's the wild part—this fluid changes color! When first secreted, it's colorless, but as it reacts with the air, it turns red and then brown. This helps hippos regulate their body temperature while looking like they're sweating blood. So, while we reach for sunscreen, hippos simply rely on their own built-in protection.

  • Why do Americans vote on Tuesdays?
    Mar 2 2025
Why do Americans vote on Tuesdays?

Blame it on 19th-century farmers! In 1845, Congress designated the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November as Election Day. This timing allowed farmers to attend church on Sunday, travel to polling stations on Monday, vote on Tuesday, and return home before market day on Wednesday. November was ideal because it was post-harvest but before harsh winter weather. But why hasn’t it changed? Tradition and legal precedent keep it in place, even though modern work schedules make weekday voting inconvenient. That’s why early voting and mail-in ballots have become so important! Some have suggested moving Election Day to a weekend or making it a federal holiday to boost voter turnout. But for now, Tuesday voting remains an American tradition—one that started with horse-drawn wagons and still shapes democracy today.Enjoyed this nugget of history? Mar 1 2025
Why did firehouses adopt Dalmatians as their mascots?

In the 1700s, these spotted canines were trained to run alongside horse-drawn carriages, calming the horses and guarding against threats. When horse-drawn fire engines emerged, Dalmatians naturally transitioned to firefighting, clearing the way and protecting equipment. Today, they honor this legacy as beloved firehouse mascots.American Kennel Club

Even after fire trucks replaced horse-drawn wagons, Dalmatians remained in firehouses, offering companionship and boosting morale. Some fire departments still keep them around as a nod to tradition—and because, let’s be honest, no one looks cooler riding on a fire truck than a Dalmatian.

Just like Dalmatians stuck with firefighters, stick with us for more daily trivia!

  • Why is rock and roll named after something sailors did?
    Feb 27 2025
Why is rock and roll named after something sailors did? Because it comes from a nautical term! The phrase "rocking and rolling" originally described the motion of ships at sea, capturing the side-to-side and forward-backward movements experienced on the ocean. Over time, this expression found its way into music, especially within African American communities, where it was used to convey spiritual fervor and, later, as a metaphor for dancing and intimacy. By the early 20th century, "rock and roll" began appearing in song titles and lyrics, eventually becoming synonymous with the energetic musical genre we know today.
