  • Morag Wehrle on Not Selling Yourself Short, Writing, Post-Partum Depression, and Blending History with Memoir
    May 22 2024

For their last interview of the season, Alex and Karen are joined by writer Morag Wehrle to talk all about the non-fiction memoir she is currently working on that centres around postpartum depression - connecting her own experience with that of a woman from the late 19th century who was institutionalized for the same condition. They discuss how the project came to be and the serendipitous nature of it; from the circumstances that led to Morag working on the book to her incredibly varied backlog of careers and passions that came together to aid in her research. Morag gives so much insight into her creativity and together they cover so many aspects of the creative practice, like creative biases and continuing to learn and explore in adulthood.

  • Em Postl and Thomas Hoeller on Streams, Improvisation, and Working with Poetry
    May 15 2024

Alex and Karen chat with musicians Em Postl and Thomas Hoeller about Streams Poetry Project, their music collaboration that transforms poetry through vocals and guitar. They give an in-depth look into the natural evolution of this project over the last 8 years, from the organic formation of the project that began with some improvisation over a book of poetry by Rumi, to their current focus of working with more local poets and getting their songs recorded. They examine their love of stream-of-consciousness style improvisation (which informed the name of the project); how they vibe off of one another; and how using intuition rather than intellectualizing their source material has allowed them to explore and give new life to works that they love.

  • Taras Luka on Moving from Ukraine to Canada, "A Part of The Journey," and Listening More
    May 8 2024

Alex and Karen talk to musician and composer Taras Luka about his journey with music, that started in the Ukraine and took him to many other parts of the world before his arrival to Canada 1.5 years ago. They chat about his globetrotting experiences and dive into the music philosophies he holds that have allowed him to pursue so many different types of music projects with a vast array of people. Taras gives much insight into the drive and passion he has for music as well as his own creative practices, and explains why the voice of his own unique experience is at the heart of everything he creates.

    Apr 24 2024

Alex and Karen talk with Marysia Tyski, the founder of Rish Jewelry, and her apprentice (and fiancé!) Michael Nunweiler to learn all about their business ventures and the art of jewelry making. Alex and Karen get a rundown of the different jewelry-making processes and dive even further into Marysia and Michael’s own processes for creating their beautiful works, from their sources of inspiration to the craftsmanship that goes into every piece. In addition to speaking about the creative side of their work, they get into the nitty-gritty details of running and growing a business, how their work and partnership has grown and evolved over time, and where they see it going from here. They also share their personal tastes in both jewelry and fashion, and discuss the power that can come from wearing the right pieces.

    Apr 17 2024

Alex and Karen welcome back Chris Johnson, their first returning interviewee (S1, E5), and his writing partner Carson Rekert to talk about their current collaboration on a horror movie screenplay, as well as their many experiences together as friends, coworkers, and roommates. Chris and Carson get into their collaboration style; their trust in one another; and how they’ve been able to stay invested in the project for 5+ years, even through huge life changes like Carson becoming a father. They also share how their love of music is incorporated into their movie writing, and how even bad movies can serve as inspiration.

  • Francis Henson on Content vs. Intent, Big Feelings, and Effect of Language on Social Identity
    Apr 10 2024

Alex and Karen are joined this week by musician, writer, teacher and certified fashionista (at least in Karen’s mind) Francis Henson! He brings with him a lot of great topics for them to dive into, like the idea of artistic identity as intent rather than content; our connection to music and art in adolescence; and music as a study of humanity. They explore Francis’ globetrotting childhood that began in The Philippines and brought him to Kazakhstan before ending up here in Vancouver, and talk about what effects that had on his understanding of himself and the world around him. And if that wasn’t enough, they also have a very impassioned discussion about fashion and the trends that they love to hate.

  • Sam Dowdell and Keely Rammage-Scott on Project Vancity, the Grunt Work of Creativity and Working in Community
    Apr 3 2024

Alex and Karen sit down with musicians Sam Dowdell (Emilyn) and Keely Rammage-Scott to talk about their work with The Project Vancity, a music initiative that works toward community building by bringing a variety of musicians in the Vancouver music scene together to create video series, shows, and other creative works. Sam and Keely share how they individually got involved with the project and how it’s evolved since they joined the team, and get into the nitty gritty of what it takes to run a registered non-profit that works with “creative people, not organized people”. They get into so many different aspects of the project, such as the challenges they face working with such a large roster of volunteers; why creating a safe space is at the forefront of the group’s mission; the aspects of the project that are most meaningful for them; and the importance of a vibe check when deciding on who to work with.
