  • 'Morning Quickie': The voice of AOL has passed away
    Nov 7 2024
You may not know his name, but you certainly know his voice. Elwood Edwards died Tuesday at the age of 74 following a long illness. He worked at 3News WKYC in Cleveland for many years as graphics guru, camera operator, and general jack-of-all-trades, yet it was a somewhat random opportunity in 1989 that earned him international fame. That year, Elwood received $200 from the then-unknown America Online, merely because his wife worked at a predecessor company. He was asked to simply record four voiceover lines: "Welcome" "You've Got Mail" "Files done" "Goodbye" Of course, the company better known as AOL blew up, and millions around the world would hear Elwood's voice telling them "You've Got Mail" every time they logged on to the internet. Despite his face not being visible, Elwood still achieved minor celebrity status. In 2015, he even appeared on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" to utter the famous greeting as well as other audience-suggested phrases. Elwood passed away the day before he was set to turn 75 years old.

A driver drove their car over a cliff Monday in California following a police pursuit that was called off mid chase. Police first discovered the vehicle after it collided into a fence. A traffic stop was initiated but the driver refused to stop. Witnesses say once the police chase ended, the vehicle accelerated and drove off the cliff, landing on the beach below. The driver was treated by the Carlsbad Fire Department for life-threatening injuries but is expected to survive. Drugs and alcohol are not factors in the crash. Morgan Mullins, of Gill, Colorado, has a pet pig named Strawberry that she calls the love of our life.” Recently, Strawberry found a stash of beer that had been left in the garage and helped herself to it. A video on TikTok shows Mullins’ partner surveying the damage, the empty beer cans, and…most importantly…a pickled Strawberry that can barely walk in a straight line after drinking an extensive quantity of Fat Tire Ale. • Morning Quickie: Presidential race is over
    Nov 6 2024
After being told for weeks to not expect to know the results of the 2024 presidential election for days after the polls closed, early this morning it became clear that former President Donald Trump had won. The moment that tipped the race was when NBC News, CBS News, AP News, and Fox News all called the battleground state of Pennsylvania for Trump. Added to his wins in North Carolina, Georgia, and other states he was always expected to win, Trump stood at 267 of the 270 electoral votes needed to win. As of 3 am Eastern time, Trump held a 15-percentage-point lead in Alaska, which has three electoral votes. Trump spoke to the election night watch party in West Palm Beach, Florida around 2:30 am, at almost the same instant that AP News joined other news services in calling Pennsylvania for him. The crowd of thousands attending the watch party of Vice President Kamala Harris at her alma mater Howard University went home after being told just before 1 am Eastern time that Harris wouldn’t be addressing supporters last night.

Commuters on a busy road in Massachusetts faced a stinky situation yesterday morning when two potable toilets fell off the back of a truck. The truck failed to clear the low-situated Massachusetts Avenue overpass on Memorial Drive in Cambridge during the morning commute, knocking two porta-potties off the truck and onto the road. The truck initially left the scene but returned about 20 minutes later to collect its smelly cargo. The incident was an example of what is known locally as "storrowing," named for Boston's Storrow Drive, which features multiple low-clearance bridges that are often struck by over-height vehicles.
