• Cutting Through the Information Overload for Parents
    Sep 17 2024

There is no shortage of accessible information, advice, and strategies for us parents, but it can all get a bit much. When seeking answers about how to handle a particular challenge, when anxiety shows up, or how we can build resilience, we can be left more confused than we were before we turned to friends, family, Google, or Chat GPT for help. Sometimes, we need to zoom out and look at things from a different perspective.

This week's guest, Child Psychologist Clare Rowe, helps us do just that, reminding us that our role as parents is to 'turn out a fully functioning, independent human being'. We can all lose sight of this in the day-to-day mayhem of family life. Clare shares so many pearls of wisdom in this episode relating to anxiety, resilience, distress, emotional regulation, consequences and creating daily opportunities for independence.

Does anxiety show up for you whenever you decide you'd like to try something new? Anxiety has a way of keeping us, and our lives, small if we let it. I recorded this episode because around here, we don't let anxiety stand in our way. In this episode I share a way of thinking about the 'task' or 'challenge' at hand so that you can break it down, manage your anxiety, get started and keep going. Enjoy this one, J x

  • The Body Keeps the Score with Kel McWilliam
    Aug 13 2024

Chronic pain can be incredibly debilitating, no matter the circumstances. But what do you do when every possible scan or investigation by medical professionals shows that there is no injury, no degeneration, absolutely nothing visible to warrant the often excruciating pain you're experiencing?

This was the experience of beloved 89.9 The Light breakfast host Kel McWilliam. The first sign of chronic back pain that would plague him for years was when he fell to the floor in agony, alone at home and unable to move. Eventually rushed to the emergency department on this occasion and others, he was admitted for days, needing strong pain medication to feel any relief.

After years of searching for answers two important health professionals steered Kel towards considering his mental health as the cause of his pain. This was start of Kel's difficult journey to face significant emotional challenges he'd closed himself off from. Now, no longer the 'back guy', Kel shares his journey of psychosomatic pain, debilitation, loss of confidence and ultimately healing through therapy and the support of his wonderful wife (and brekky co-host Lucy), family and friends. This is a powerful episode not to be missed.

  • Missed Diagnosis: ADHD Mums with Jane McFadden
    Aug 6 2024

Once thought to be a male only disorder we know now that girls with ADHD are underdiagnosed. Without a diagnosis and the deep understanding that comes with it, many women with undiagnosed ADHD describe spending a lot of their lives feeling 'different', 'stupid', 'lazy' and 'careless' - not realising that their brain operates in a different way to many of those around them. Without the correct diagnosis and treatment, ADHD can greatly affect women's self-esteem, emotional wellbeing, professional life, relationships and parenting.

This week's guest, Jane McFadden, knows this all too well. As a former psychologist diagnosed with ADHD in 2022, and later Autism in 2024, Jane founded ADHD Mums to help women feel validated, give them a sense of belonging to to empower them with everything they need to reduce suffering, understand and embrace who they are, learn the role of medication and thrive.

Jane McFadden is an Autism Spectrum Disorder Clinical Specialist, Neuroscientist and Neurodivergence Assessor and Specialist living on the Sunshine Coast with her beautiful family including her three 'neurospicy' kids.
