  • Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
    Dec 25 2021
On this episode of Why Press Play we put on the Venetian masks of mystery and explore the last movie or arguably the greatest director of the 20th century; Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut from 1999. Definitely not a feel good Sunday evening movie, this challenging and entirely engrossing vignette into the dark world behind the glitzy facade of the upper echelons of high society will make you question everything you think you know about that side of our world (much less nowadays but this is from 1999) Kubrick died just before this movie was released and therefore it is widely considered 'unfinished' as he did like to hang around the editing booth for months tweaking and fixing. Some even say it was the subject matter in the film that ensured his untimely demise, including his daughter. Watch it and see what you think! Sean has massive insight to this film and has way more knowledge that this little movie podcast can hold about Kubrick and the depth of visual storytelling he regularly created. And you can also categorise this one as a Christmas movie as its set at Christmas time and there is a Christmas tree in every scene! I know, weird right? But this movie does indeed deserve as many rewatches as your brain will let you! If you would like to find Sean online you can go to his YouTube channel here https://www.youtube.com/user/SeanDrawn1 and from there you can find all the other places he resides on the internet. He is a gifted comedian, writer, and artist and I'm sure there are way to interact with him and all these versions of his art online. **Disclaimer** This episode was one of a batch that was recorded in the old studio in 2017! Imagine?!! I will be releasing about another dozen of these in the coming weeks and Why Press Play is making a resurgence into the podcasting space :) Its good to be back, and I hope you enjoy the show! • Metropolitan (1990)
    Dec 16 2017
On this episode of Why Press Play we dust off the martini glasses and put on our patent leather shoes for a night on the town with the finest New York beaus and debutantes in a weird movie from director Whit Stilman and graciously shown to me by Gareth Stack called Metropolitan from 1990.In a nebulous time somewhere between 1950 and 1990 a loosely affiliated group of new rich haute bourgeoise calling themselves a 'Rat Pack' of sorts, are flitting from after-party to after-party in the New York Debutante Ball scene at Christmas time. Its a weird film that showcases the strange and unapproachable personalities of these seemingly disconnected rich kids in their late teens and early twenties. It does have its charms however and as the movie opens up from an impenetrable web of political and high art references into a story about what teens want to really talk about, sex and love. The relationships bloom over the Christmas season and when drugs and alcohol are involved it becomes all the more dramatic. Yes this is a weird film, but by the end I really liked it and Im sure you will too! Dont chalk it down to be a Christmas movie (technically its the first of the very loose Christmas movie season on WPP) but it does have wonderfully shot scenes in oppulent apartments in the Upper West Side of New York, decor very few of us will see in real life! This was a pick of Gareths and after suspecting a trick was being played on me I was pleasantly surprised. You can find Gareth on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/garethstack or at http://www.garethstack.com to listen to all his radio plays and podcasts.Let us know what you think of the show by following Why Press play on social media:Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/whypressplayTwitter: http://www.twitter.com/whypressplayInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/whypressplayPinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/whypressplayReddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/whypressplayYouTube: http://www.youtube.com/whypressplayTwitch: http://www.twitch.tv/whypressplayVid.me: http://www.vid.me/whypressplayJoin us and other fans for chats on movies, games and TV show on our Discord server by clicking here and downloading the app: https://discord.gg/U2pHR5gAnd you can support the show by subscribing to our Patreon page where you will get loads of exclusive content and discounts on merchandise http://www.patreon.com/whypressplay Learn more about your ad choices. • Robocop (1987)
    Nov 23 2017
On this episode of Why Press Play you must come quietly or there will be... trouble as we get on the bullet train to Detroit and heavily pad the street with our old pal Murphy, looking for crime in all the wrong places and revelling in the realistic special effects and bitingly witty dialog inthe company of filmmaker and raconteur Anthony Downes.OCP, a multi national conglomerate has created two new types of law enforcement to quell the rising tide of violent crime sweeping the city in order to make it pallatable for the development of a new futuristic city scape. ED209 an animalistic creation and Robocop a hybrid human brained robot police officer are the offerings. After being 'killed' in a gang attack officer Alex Murphy and his beauitful brain are adopted into this program and he becomes Robocop, only to shake his programming and go after the men who killed him in the first place! Its a whopper film that, believe it or not, some people havnt seen! I chat about its merits and give alternative choices for some of the more wooden performances with Antony who we talk about Memento with some months ago. A must watch for science fiction fans and you can have something to watch over Thanksgiving, or not, its your move... creep!Let us know what you think of the show by following Why Press play on social media:Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/whypressplayTwitter: http://www.twitter.com/whypressplayInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/whypressplayPinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/whypressplayReddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/whypressplayYouTube: http://www.youtube.com/whypressplayTwitch: http://www.twitch.tv/whypressplayVid.me: http://www.vid.me/whypressplayJoin us and other fans for chats on movies, games and TV show on our Discord server by clicking here and downloading the app: https://discord.gg/U2pHR5gAnd you can support the show by subscribing to our Patreon page where you will get loads of exclusive content and discounts on merchandise http://www.patreon.com/whypressplay Learn more about your ad choices.
