Nel febbraio 2017 è stata annunciata la scoperta del più grande sistema planetario mai avvistato fino ad ora, a "soli" 40 anni luce dalla Terra. Si tratta di un insieme di sette pianeti che ruotano intorno a una stella molto più piccola e meno luminosa del Sole. La stella è stata battezzata Trappist-1 dal nome di uno dei telescopi usati per individuare questo sistema solare. Sei di questi pianeti si trovano in una zona temperata e cioè con una temperatura che oscilla tra gli 0 e i 100 gradi.
